2021 Game of the Year

by dijag

Would like to play:

Kena Bridge of Spirits, Nier Replicant, Little Nightmares 2, SM3DW Bowser's Fury, No More Heroes 3, Tales of Arise, Solar Ash, Boomerang X, Tormented Souls

Best Combat Sandwiched Between Anime: Scarlet Nexus

The combat in Scarlet Nexus is a blast, consisting of flinging objects around with your mind at various bizarre looking creatures and borrowing other cool powers from your teammates. It just happens that the fun combat is sandwiched in between some rather questionable extended anime sequences.

Most Improved Sequel: Psychonauts 2

I wasn't a big fan of the first Psychonauts, but 2 made significant improvements, particularly in the platforming gameplay and story. Still not really into that art style though.

Biggest Step Down: Deathloop

Deathloop is a cool game that I had some fun with, but coming off the Dishonored series and Prey, it felt like a step down for Arkane. The game is incredibly hand holdy and lacks any real challenge, which is pretty much the opposite of what I expect out of Arkane.

Returnal

1. Returnal

It finally happened! Someone made a truly great rogue-lite game! It turns out playing the same areas over and over can be really fun if you make your game feel incredible to control, and that's what Housemarque did with Returnal. Throw in a mysterious story with fantastic visuals and atmosphere, plus some great boss fights, and you have the best game of 2021.

Resident Evil Village

2. Resident Evil Village

I still prefer the classic 3rd person style RE games, but I can really appreciate the absurdity of these first person games. The story beats in Village are even more ludicrous than RE7's were. Also features one of the best implementations of video game suspense I have ever played with that doll house sequence.

Metroid Dread

3. Metroid Dread

The best a Metroid game has ever felt to play. Dread has a few frustrating moments with some questionable stealth aspects, but overall it is a fantastic return for the franchise. We even get a cool twisty story and Samus just constantly being the most badass anyone could ever be.

Halo Infinite

4. Halo Infinite

Halo is back! One of the best grappling hooks in video game history combined with some open world shenanigans make this the best playing Halo since the original trilogy. I've never been big on Halo multiplayer, but even that has been a blast to play with Infinite.

Death's Door

5. Death's Door

A really tight Zelda-like dungeon crawler with a beautiful art style and soundtrack. Solid combat and plenty of secrets to find had me playing this pretty much nonstop until I hit the finish line.

6. Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy

An all around solid single player superhero adventure game. Take out the combat and this could pass as another Guardians movie. The dialogue is surprisingly entertaining, and it just feels good to be in that universe, along for the ride with that goofy crew.

The Artful Escape

7. The Artful Escape

Carl Weathers. Press X to shred. What more needs to be said?

Forza Horizon 5

8. Forza Horizon 5

The Horizon series is the closest modern games get to old school arcade style joy. Numbers always going up all around you, random stuff constantly unlocking, and a visual treat for the eyes. It's just pure video game fun.

Lost Judgment

9. Lost Judgment

Cyber Shadow

10. Cyber Shadow

This is classic NES style Ninja Gaiden modernized with surprising abilities that add some fun mobility. The soundtrack is fantastic and the pixel art cut scenes look rad. The only thing keeping it from being higher on this list is a pretty crazy difficulty spike in the final few chapters.
