Durandir's Game of the Year 2025

by durandir

This was my list for Giant Bomb, but I was too late. Couldn't save it once I had written it on the old website, so put unedited up on "infinitebacklog.net". But now the new site has lists, so here it is!: Putting this list together a bit hastily on the last day of the old website. Maybe I'll edit it once the new one is up with the ability to do lists. Or maybe my list is perfect. 1-10 is ordered, 11-25 are "honorable mentions". 26-onwards are older games I have played for the first time this year that I feel deserves a mention. I try to only do games that are out of early access. I am not a good writer, but I try to write a few thoughts at least for each entry. Mostly just off the top of my head.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

1. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

What can I say. Number one with a bullet. It kind of has it all. Great story and storytelling, characters more realized than most other games, masterclass world and worldbuilding, engaging and fun gameplay and most likely one of the best soundtracks of all time. I love this game, I adore it. I want and wish that everyone could play this and feel the things I felt. Anyone's life is lesser for not experiencing this the same way. But that is just how I feel, and I know everyone is different. But for me this is a clear winner this year. Nothing came close. Which is wild, because this wasn't even really on my radar before it actually came out.

Hollow Knight: Silksong

2. Hollow Knight: Silksong

Silksong delivered what it promised! I am a huge Hollow Knight fan, and this is a game truly worthy of that name. Some of the challenge was a bit too much for me though, so it was more frustrating at times than the first one. But all in all I loved it. In a year without Clair Obscur it would probably be a shoe in for the first place.

Promise Mascot Agency

3. Promise Mascot Agency

This came out of left field for me. One of the few games I 100% beat this year! Lovable and goofy characters, a wacky story and fun, weird gameplay. Unlike anything I have played before.

Two Point Museum

4. Two Point Museum

Another great entry in the 'Two Point' series! Probably the best one yet! Love how you eventually can build just what you want your museum to be. I think you can jam things a lot tighter than the previous games in the series, so things can look a lot more natural. Still have a bunch of stars to unlock, so I'll probably jump back in now and again. Also can't wait to see what their next entry in the series is!

The Roottrees are Dead

5. The Roottrees are Dead

I hope something like this comes out every year for the rest of time. I put this in the same bin as Obra Dinn and Golden Idol. Some of the answers was really obscure, but I mostly got it on my own. The sense of accomplishment you get from this type of game is unlike any other.

Foundation

6. Foundation

Finally out of early access, and it really delivered! Super cozy. The freeform way of building is great. Will come back to this periodically for a long time.

Shinobi: Art of Vengeance

7. Shinobi: Art of Vengeance

Because this came out just before Silksong I have only played it for a couple of hours. Started it up again now, and this is so fun! I just know I am going to really enjoy this, with snappy combat, fun traversal and a lot of secrets hidden around every level.

Blue Prince

8. Blue Prince

I enjoyed my time with Blue Prince a lot, though the random nature of the game stopped it from being higher. I reached a point where I needed two things to happen together to progress something post credits. And they just never did. Maybe I'll go back someday and try again, I have my notes in a physical book so I can do that. But they should have given more options to turn down the randomness after beating the main story, in my opinion.

Borderlands 4

9. Borderlands 4

It's more Borderlands but better. I like the few gameplay changes they have done, and for once every character seems like they are interesting to play. So much that I kind of want to try all of them. The guns are also really good this time, rarely find something that feels bad to use. Which is a huge contrast to the few hours I tried to play Wonderlands before this came out. Playing through it slowly solo, because me and my brothers are trying to beat it together. Which is even slower since they have kids. It's more Borderlands but better. Assassin's Creed Shadows

10. Assassin's Creed Shadows

My relationship with the Assassin's Creed franchise is a weird one. I think I have played as many as I have not. Played all of the Ezio ones, I played 3 and only a little of Black Flag (my PC at the time couldn't handle it). Then I skipped Unity, can't remember if I beat Syndicate or not so I probably didn't, then I fell properly off. Only got Origins when Odyssey came out because it was on sale, but only played a few hours because of hardware issues. Again. Valhalla I played through fully, and I loved it. Not only because of me being a long haired, bearded Norwegian dude, I genuinely loved it. Then I was actually expecting to skip Shadows, just as I skipped Mirage. But the more I saw of it the more I wanted it. And I really like it. I played it for 20 or so hours right away, then took a long break because of other games. I just came back to it, and I am really liking it. Having two distinct playstyles is really fun. In Valhalla it never felt right to sneak about as much, but the brute-playstyle was fun so I had a blast anyway. But now I can go in like a wrecking ball, or I can sneak about properly. The world is also gorgeous and I like the characters. The story is fine enough as far as I have gotten, I am more vibing with it just doing stuff really.
