This year I've cheated a bit with my list as I usually like to only really focus on the games that came out in that particular year. However, this year I found myself going back to a lot of older games. Games I'd played before, classic games I'd never played, re-releases etc. Even a game like RimWorld, which I feel like I've been playing forever at this point and Monster Hunter World, which still feels like monster hunter under all the new shiny improvements, feel like old games.
So I've made two lists:
One for games released this year and one for older games that I played for the first time this year. This list is the later.

I've always tried to get into SNES games. For a large portion of my gaming life I've seen my lack of experience with the SNES as something of a hole in my game-knowledge and I wanted to fix that, but could never seem to 100% get through any one game for some reason. The only SNES game I've ever beaten up until this point has been chrono trigger and that was the DS re-release. Last year I was gifted a SNES classic which spurred me to really push myself to play this gamut of games that had come before me.
The opening moments in Super Metroid are maybe the most well done sequence in a game I've ever played.
