GOATY 2018

by wacky_delly

This will probably change before the GB lists go up. Didn't play as many new games this year. In fact, I'm not sure I played 10 games that were released this year. Did buy more remakes/HD remasters/rereleases than I realized (Bayonetta, Lumines, Shenmue, Katamari). Also a lot of Final Fantasy 14.

Tetris Effect

1. Tetris Effect

EDM Tetris is something I never knew I needed in my life.

Dead Cells

2. Dead Cells

1.0 was this year so it counts. The switch version's performance issues aside, good controls, good platforming. Run based? More like Fun based, amirite?

Marvel's Spider-Man

3. Marvel's Spider-Man

Triple-A licenced comic book game. That's 2 or 3 strikes against it from the start, but the controls are good. The story is firmly in the "Marvel Cinematic Universe" mold. To me that's not a bad thing. There's plenty to do, but it does get repetitive going for the platinum.

God of War

4. God of War

I bought this, but haven't started it yet. So at the bottom it goes. EDIT(12/26): I've started this. It's real good.

BattleTech

5. BattleTech

Does a great job of capturing the drama of tabletop. Even if the dice rolls feel stacked against you.

The Messenger

6. The Messenger

I haven't finished this yet, but I'm a sucker for games that look like this. Controls are tight and the action-platforming is great.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

7. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

At the time I write this, Smash comes out tomorrow. Unless things are totally busted I'm assuming this is where it'll go.

Night in the Woods

8. Night in the Woods

This came out on Switch in 2018, so I'm counting it.

Yakuza Kiwami

9. Yakuza Kiwami

This was something I came to from PS+ It didn't come out this year, but deserves a shoutout.

Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon

10. Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon

See The Messenger above.
