The younger brother is afraid of swimming and the older has died. Younger one is controlled by one stick and can't move forward. Even though the older one is no longer there and ostensibly his stick doesn't do anything, moving his stick with the younger brother's stick allows the younger one to swim across. You're using his memory/spirit to help the younger one move along.
Relationship between characters falling apart and the puzzles pieces force each other away from each other. At some point a relationship is no longer fixable no matter how hard you try.
