Best of 2020!

Its a weird year. Lots of stuff got put on hold because of the virus. I feel like by the end of the year it was still pretty strong though? Cyberpunk really let us down being released in a broken state. But could they do ANOTHER delay? yeah they should ave....

Animal Crossing missed a lot of marks, (it should have been much better than it was; standing on the shoulders of giants - from New leaf it should have been my favorite game of all time and it falls short of that). But because of the virus it sold gangbusters, (more than it probably should have). Other than that Nintendo has been quiet, with just some Mario stuff and a Hyrule Warriors game (which sold really well even though it runs like crap, its just there was NOTHING else on Switch). Switch fans just eat anything up.

I'm not even that into some of the big games this year - like Doom 2 and Resident Evil 3 remake which seemed to not wow fans either.

Sony was by far the strongest contender with the PS5 launch (even though it seems buggy), and some big titles like Ghosts, Last of Us, Miles Morales, Demons Souls, and Sack Boy.

I am weary of some games -- FF7 for example, i didn't like the original, and it seems to not really improve that much, it looks nice, but im not dying to try it. -- I think ill wait for a "complete edition" of FF7 some years down the road.

And its the end of a generation for both Xbox and Sony. Sony end with some of its biggest games ever, Xbox seems to be trying to get anything it can for a weird launch window. i cant think of a single non-3rd party game Id want on Xbox? Which is weird because games should be their focus as they try to push Game Pass which i do enjoy, I'm playing Carto on there right now. Their launch feels weird to me because they really seem to be heading to launching Gamepass soon on TVs and such, why drop $500 on a system where you'll probably just play Game Pass? I'm very interested to come back to this in 2 years and see what the landscape looks like then.

But there was still some great stuff, and a pretty good year all around, I think Sony pushed this to be a very strong year:

I cried at one game this year - multiple times. This is it. You are death. on a boat. And you need to ferry the souls of people you knew into their afterlife after helping them achieve a bit of closure. And when they are ready - GET READY TO CRY!! The adorable hedgehog needs you to buold her room on the deck because her legs stop working well, then you need to walk her to her room or she gets left out alone all night (you feel terrible!), and finally she realizes in a moment of clarity that its time, as she thinks you are her daughter taking her to see her deceased husband... walking the hedgehog who is losing her memory to her final rest, im getting water in my eyes thinking about it right now, i really ma... Its like she embodies your grandma. Its sad and sweet and fun and melancholy all at the same time. So impactful!

Cyberpunk 2077

PATCH BRINGS THIS UP!!!!! Its so broken on PS4 that it cant be higher - it should be game of the year with all the hype, and maybe patches will make it better? But I cant buy it in the state its in now. So its probably a PS5 game for me someday. Seems like a great game - but literally shouldn't have been launched in the state it was launched in, and I cant reward that.

Ghost of Tsushima

3. Ghost of Tsushima

AHHHHHH. It even has "Kurisowa Mode" to make it look like Seven Samurai or Hidden Fortress. Where have you been all my life game!? Its like Assassins Creed, but you can go stealth as a ninja, or just run in swords out for a dual as a samurai. Looks good, sounds good, its freaking game of the year. Way to go Sucker Punch!

The Last of Us Part II

4. The Last of Us Part II

This is a story based game. i have tried so hard to not see spoilers. but it really seems the hate for this game comes from killing off a main character (hey stories are hard sometimes guys), and that there is a buff lesbian in it. So fuck you to anyone who hates this game and sent death threats to voice actors because "a girl has big muscles" in this game. I worked with many a buff lady at my last job. They exist. And its a game. And you have a very privileged life if a video game story is the worst thing to happen to you... This got Game of the Year multiple places and again, shows Sony really cleaned up this year with the best line up of games, its not being a Sony fanboy, its what makes you a Sony fanboy (someone else can come clean up next year and ill gush over them - but Xbox really let us down this year, nothing on my list except some Gamepass games that were out elsewhere as well, they spent like 9 billion on studios but this year had NOTHING to show for it; disappointing).

Immortals: Fenyx Rising

5. Immortals: Fenyx Rising

So AC Vikings didn't make the top 10 (Valhalla) because there are so many of those games being made so fast, but its still on this list because they are very well made games. And this is very mush another Ubisoft A game. Its made by Assassins Creed Odyssey's development team. -- But its what the series needs, a shot in the arm of "something different". now people blast this as looking too much like Breath of the Wild, BUT Breath of the Wild had already stolen so much from Assassins Creed that I dont think thats fair. BoTW was more different than a regular Zelda, than this is fro ma regular Assassins reed. if you said "make a fun cartoony AC" this is it. And yes it looks like Zelda. But again ,thats because thats what Zelda did. And this gets rid of so much annoying crap from Zelda (breaking weapons, I cant stress how shitty breaking weapons are). And this uses the newer weapons system from AC which is a lot of fun, you keep and upgrade weapons, making weapons actually FUN! T^his has some very hit or miss humor, and it doesn't have the window dressing that Zelda does 9if you like Link you like Link right?), but this may be better objectively than BoTW, I thought Origins was hands down a better game than BoTW as well. So give this a shot, its kind of being dismissed and going under the radar? But yeah, bring BoTW to all systems isn't a bad thing anyway. -- i do wish it kept the Gods and Monsters name though this is a poor title ha-ha

Animal Crossing: New Horizons

6. Animal Crossing: New Horizons

I am disappointed in Animal Crossing. The last one on 3DS was probably actually better. But this is more of the same in many ways, some improvements, some steps back. I'm a little mad it sold so well simply because of Switch and Covid - making people think it is better than it is, but New Leaf on 3DS was in my top 5 games of all time, so again - I love this LOVE it but it needed more. I know that sounds weird, but its an dd feeling to be so hyped for a game, be let down, but suddenly like band wagon jumpers people pick it up and think "game of the year". Like im with you, but i also feel i should be allowed to be disappointed!!! Ive been along for the ride you haven't! That's why this is a personal list. This is still top 5, but it should be an easy 1. I feel like most people didn't play New Leaf (look at sales, like 5 million to 20 million, so obviously they didn't!). And I just feel like they dont know what this game SHOULD have been. But buy it, its great.

Sackboy: A Big Adventure

7. Sackboy: A Big Adventure

No one is mentioning this game. I would have been a little "meh" on a Little Big Planet 4. But boy this is as good as most Mario games, better than any Sonic game. I feel THIS is the under rated PS5 launch game. This is the hidden gem!!! It makes Sackboy control like how he always should have, and give cute levels that you dont need to make. better than the Yoshi game on Switch. Its great.

Carrion

8. Carrion

Such a weird game, you are basically the thing and you eat everyone and get out to infect the world at the end, its just short enough i didn't get bored, a few puzzles were obtuse and i had to look up where i was supposed to go (could get lost). But man I want a sequel!!!

Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales

9. Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales

Its spider-man, its amazing. its kind of short, but its what the PS5 launch needed. And sadly the Xbox brought nothing like this al launch. The PS5 itself seems buggy, and the Xbox seems to run better so its an odd pair. But this is also put on PS4, and worth picking up if you liked the first spider-man, but Im really waiting for the full sequel!

Hades

10. Hades

I have not played this yet as I'm waiting for it to come to PS4. But I loved Bastion, and this is getting rave reviews! This looks very Bastion.
