GOTY 2016

This year more than ever I had less time to spend on playing videogames. I finished my bachelor and started on my masters degree which meant less free time.

Pile of shame (games I didn't play at all or enough):

  • Dark Souls III
  • Hitman
  • Hyper Light Drifter
  • I am Setsuna
  • Mafia III
  • Gears of War 4
  • Stardew Valley
  • Witcher 3: Blood and Wine
  • Deus Ex: Mankind Divided
  • Dishonored 2
  • Firewatch
  • Darkest Dungeon
  • plus many more

Games I spent too much time on:

  • Hearthstone

Games I played intensily for a short period but bounced off fast:

  • World of Warcraft: Legion

Here is my list for the games I enjoyed the most during 2016.

Showing 1-10 of 10 items

Inside

1. Inside

Limbo is a game that I hold very dear so of course I was very excited for another game in the same style. Despite some frustration with a few of the puzzles I really fell in love with this game. To me the intricate details in the environments, the haunting atmosphere and the even more fucked up deaths than Limbo all added to make a memorable experience. I was desperate to push forward and learn more about the world of Inside. To me this game is one of the best looking this year.

Street Fighter V

2. Street Fighter V

People who put Street Fighter V on their game of the year list have to defend it and I am no different. Capcom did almost everything wrong with this game and continue to do so (for example after the latest December 2016 update the game no longer registers more than one controller, breaking local multiplayer). But despite all this the gameplay makes me keep coming back. This speaks volumes to me. Another reason that SFV is so high on my list is that it is what finally got me into fighting games. I've always been fascinated with fighting games but always been afraid of playing them. They seemed to hard, too competitive and not good at all at teaching beginners. This all remains somewhat true for SFV but after having spent 160 hours on the game this year I am starting to feel at least better than trash at the game (I reached silver earlier this year, after around 150 hours!). I will continue to play SFV on and off, desperately waiting for Capcom to fix the netcode, battle lounges, DLC prices and much more. If that day comes I will surely get back into the game as hard as I did earlier this year. In the mean time I will always look back on SFV fondly, because it is the game that got me into fighting games and watching the thrilling Capcom Tour (ending with NuckleDu winning the Capcom Cup! Go NuckleDu!). The latest Guilty Gear is out on PC now and I'm looking forward to diving into that...

Overwatch

3. Overwatch

Overcooked!

4. Overcooked!

Easily the best local co-op this year, Overcooked is a game about always having too much on your plate (pun intended). The only negative I can say about the game is that after around 6 hours there is nothing more to do. Give me more DLC!

Abzû

5. Abzû

Abzû starts as Journey under water which to me is even more beautiful than Journey (which says a lot). Of course Abzû doesn't have as strong an effect as Journey (partly because there is no multiplayer) but it is still one of the best games this year. The part that makes Abzû really special to me is that it evolves during the short time you play it and it does not remain a screensaver for schools of fish. Play this game on a big TV with headphones on, you won't be disappointed.

The Witness

6. The Witness

Doom

7. Doom

I have only spent a few hours with Doom this year, but I really like what I've seen. I hope it gets as good as people are saying, but based on the little time I've spent with it I cannot put it higher on my list.

Samorost 3

9. Samorost 3

Battlefield 1

10. Battlefield 1
