My Top games of 2014

In no particular order of course but these are my top games of 2014. a little more sparse that i'd like but that let me spend some more time with some of the list (Hearthstone in particular).

Have a great 2015.

Bayonetta 2

Bayonetta 2

So, I finished it but I wasn't overly hot on the original Bayonetta. it's humour didn't catch me and it's combat felt frustrating at the time. Buying the Bayonetta double-pack on Wii-U was the right choice for me because playing through the original and 2014's Bayonetta 2 was a godsend. the mechanics and weapons felt fun and refreshing and it's small nods to older jokes were smart and humourous shame about the squirrel kid.

Hearthstone

Hearthstone

I got into the Hearthstone beta late in 2013 and never really picked it up but one bank holiday weekend in early 2014 i fired this up with a whiskey and was instantly hooked. i've never put money into a F2P game but Hearthstones great proposition of fun and luck over who has the right cards, is a winning formula.

South Park: The Stick of Truth

South Park: The Stick of Truth

South Park is on this list for many reasons but most of all because they finally did it. After years of poor South Park games and a lot of moments where this game nearly got canned/reworked/moved to different publishers/embroiled in lawsuits and rewritten, the Stick of Truth is a beacon which shows just how far media can cross-mediums if it's treated with the right care.

Nidhogg

Nidhogg

in a similar way Divekick distilled pure fighting essence last year, Nidhogg amps up the combat to a near explosion and never comes back down. There aren't many games my girlfriend can tease me about when it comes to our win/loss ratio, Nidhogg is the exception.

Diablo III: Ultimate Evil Edition

Diablo III: Ultimate Evil Edition

Diablo 3 has made such the improvement over the past few years that when i got my hands on Bungie's latest and greatest i could help but feel 'i'd rather be playing Diablo' all the way through. so much so that I traded my copy of Destiny in for Ultimate Evil on PS4 so I could do a little couch-coop with friends. DIablo 3 is the best it's ever been for a looter and it continues to get better in 2014.

Child of Light

Child of Light

I picked up the Vita version on sale around the middle of the year not expecting a great deal from it. after a few hours i fell in love with the art, combat, music and characters of this weird and wonderful world. finishing the game within 10 hours, it was a delightful weekend playthrough on a rainy patch of the UK weather, hugely recommended.

Hyrule Warriors

Hyrule Warriors

Now, this game, is a huge surprise to me. At E3, I was making fun of hyrule warriors for looking awful and once I had purchased my Wii-u I picked this up on launch to see if it really was terrible... but it's not, it's fricking awesome. Even now, months after release, i still play Hyrule warriors 3 or 4 times a week, slowly completing it's adventure maps and getting more loot.

Transistor

Transistor

Bastion left a sour taste in my mouth but the moment I saw Transistor I fell in love. the Neo-Tokyo enspired look of the city, and the incredible combat were enough to sell me but the magnificent soundtrack (that's 2 for 2 SuperGiant!) cements this game in my memory.

Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc

Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc

I'm a big fan of Visual Novel titles with a bit of a twist. Games like 999, VLR and Phoenix Wright rank highly on my list of favourite titles of all time. Danganronpa doesnt quite hit that high bar but it let the player take an incredible journey and meet some really interesting characters.
