Crazy to think that a game that came out at the start of the year takes the top spot on my list, Mass Effect 2 was everything the first game strived to be and more.
Starcraft 2 isn't just a good game, it makes me want to be a better player. It took the RTS formula PC gamers knew so well and refined them so much that within half a minute the flow of a entire battle can change. simply brilliant
I only got into Splinter Cell with Double Agent but Convictions different take on Fishers style of stealth action really made stealth seem even more awesome than anything else before it.
Espionage Action? no. Confusing story? nah. Awesome coop and building your own army to send out on missions? Fuck yes.
let me just say it, Alpha Protocol wins the 2010 award for 'game with most promise' I really enjoyed my time with Mike Thornton and his little gang of spies, and that each time i played through it was a totally different experience. I hope they do something with this and not just let it die.
Heavy Rain was number 1 on my 'games i'll buy when i get a PS3' list and while it didn't live up to the hype many critics gave it, I've never played another game like it (nor will I if Dave Cage has anything to say about it)
The first time i saw Darksiders at an event in London last year, I knew I would absolutely love it. The Gothic aesthetic that pulsed through the world was fantastic and the Zelda/God Of War style gameplay parts that had been lifted from some of the finest titles ever created were as silky smooth as i would have hoped. a great new IP of 2010
Takes a typically Japanese series and making it more Western is a decidedly hard thing to do. MercurySteam however managed to totally pull of a stunning polygonal Castlevania which, while starting off slow, had a fantastic ending. Heres hoping Konami let them give this another go :)
I was really late to the part with Bioshock 1 but when i eventually got round to it, it's underwater drug habits really made me fall in love with it. Somehow it was exactly the same story with Bioshock 2, 4 or 5 months after its release i finally managed to sit down with it and loved it from beginning to end. Even now, I still play the multiplayer with friends.
there aren't many companies who could sell me the same game twice and just tack on 25% extra content, but somehow Capcom know how to push my buttons. SSF4 was the best fighter of this year, mainly because SF4 was the best fighter of 2009.
