2014 isn't what I would consider a banner year in video games. In fact, it was pretty poor when compared to recent years. There were so many delays and it felt like every other game that came out either severally disappointed in terms of expectations or simply did not work.
That said, I was motivated to purchase three new consoles this year. I bought another Xbox 360 around mid-year because my previous one had died. As it turns out, the 360 is becoming one of my favorite consoles of all time. I have so much content built up through the years that I felt I was wasting my money if I didn't buy another after my original went down. I then purchased a Wii U about 3 months later. The amount of games that interested me and the price I paid was something I couldn't pass up. Not too long after, I decided to get an Xbox One, based mostly on Black Friday deals and The Master Chief Collection.
With these new consoles in tow, I was able to trudge through all the delays and underwhelming games to find some gems.

Holy smokes. Mario Kart 8 is awesome. People love to give Nintendo flack for releasing Mario Kart games, but realistically, they only ever release one for each console. And my God, this one is awesome. I never touched Mario Kart Wii, and I do not play handhelds that much. So this is my first Mario Kart since Double-Dash (which I only played sparingly). And what a game it is. First off, it's beautiful. All of the courses are so visually impressive and all of the small details add to what I believe is the best looking game of the year. It also sounds amazing and features so much great music throughout. Then there's the main attraction: the 4 player co-operative play. It's such a blast to get a group of players together and go through a few cups. This year, no other game provided nearly as much fun or excitement for me as Mario Kart 8. It's a definite classic and a shining example of why I still love Nintendo games.
