Best of 2019

Not a vintage year for gaming, with publishers clearly holding things back for the next gen. Still, there's no such thing as a bad year in the world of games, with numerous classics being released. Here are my favourites of the lot.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice

1. Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice

The masters at From Software crafted their best combat engine to date and married it to some of their best world design. Plus, you have a grappling hook. What's not to love?

Devil May Cry 5

2. Devil May Cry 5

A lovely counterpart to From's exacting, punishing Sekiro. Capcom excels at over the top nonsense and DMC 5 is a stunning return to form for the series.

Grindstone

3. Grindstone

At their best Capy Games makes quality games like few others and this is them at their very best.

Fire Emblem: Three Houses

4. Fire Emblem: Three Houses

2019 - the year the internet overflowed with love for all its beautiful anime children. Apparently there was a tactical game in there somehwere, too.

Untitled Goose Game

5. Untitled Goose Game

Hero/Villain of the year.

Death Stranding

6. Death Stranding

Being a Kojima game of course the plot goes completely off the rails. Before drowning the player in cutscenes near the end though, Death Stranding gives us 30-50 hours to wander its Iceland-inspired wastes with nothing to do except deliver over-sized packages. And what lovely 30-50 hours those were.

Resident Evil 2

7. Resident Evil 2

or: How to remake a classic game by updating all the out-of-date parts but keeping the good bits intact.

Borderlands 3

8. Borderlands 3

For fun times of couch co-op, look no further than Borderlands 3.

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order

9. Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order

Didn't finish this one in time for the new year but the first 8 hours or so were a lovely little Star Wars action adventure.

Outer Wilds

10. Outer Wilds

Didn't play enough of this incredibly charming game but its undeniable quality is at least deserving of an honourary part on my list. To be finished in 2020.
