Take Hidetaka Miyazaki and co's detail oriented combat and world design, whittle it down and focus on lightning paced melee combat and an unforgettable Victorian horror setting and what do you get? Game of the year 2015.
A triumphant send-off for Geralt in what is by far the best game in the series. Beautiful, memorable open world rpg.
...The Taken King, that is. Not the "real release of a game that's been in beta for a year" as the cynics say but certainly a huge refinement. Bungie have married their best in class first person combat mechanics to a very effective loot grind and the result is a fantastic game, plain and simple. Still wish they'd introduce matchmaking to Nightfalls and Raids, though.
After MGS 4's many (many) self-indulgent failings I thought I'd never have the urge to play another Metal Gear game. Way to prove me wrong, Kojima! And to think, all it took was for KojiPro to focus on gameplay and let the story stay in the background for once.
Pure, unadulterated shooty boots fun.
What a deliciously sadistic game this is. Dripping with style and deep, fun mechanics, this is a game I'll keep coming back to for a long while.
Best sports game since Technos' Nintendo World Cup for NES. For those of you who maintain this is the true game of the year, you're not wrong either. Except you know, Bloodborne.
Deep and fun battle mechanics and a neat theme combine to make a memorable game. Could have done with a bit more of Spelunky-like emergent randomness to stave off the samey-ness, though.
2015's (Lego) Game of the Year 2013 - Also best game to play with your daughter while simultaneously teaching her the names of obscure heroes from the Marvel ouevre.
