Games completed in 2017

A list I'll update as I go throughout the year. I'm adopting a 5/5 score as opposed to 10/10 this time.

Rise of the Tomb Raider

1. Rise of the Tomb Raider

Completed 08/01/2017 What started out with such promise soon seemed to tread familiar territory which just kept feeling like more of the same. Rise seems happy to put Lara in a near identical situation from the first game even down to the undead army that she doesn't even seem to bat an eyelid at (I supose she did see them in the original). Mowing down 300 men with the occasional puzzle ran a little thin by the end and then the ending seemed more focused on setting up a future sequel then actually tying off the story in any significant way. 3/5

Watch Dogs 2

2. Watch Dogs 2

Completed 28/01/2017 Certainly an improvement over the first entry in the series, Watch Dogs 2 takes a much more light hearted approach where the original was dark and grim. Sadly however, the city feels a little dead - traffic is none existent at all times, and the world doesn't really react to you as much as it should, or as much as it has done in other more polished open world games (GTA V). The photo based location spotting was a nice touch, and the amount of custom clothes was great. Overall I enjoyed the game, I enjoyed the characters, it was just a shame that the story never really expanded beyond its original ideals. Having multiple protaganist would be a step in the right direction if the franchise gets a third entry. They just need to work on story / gameplay structure to make Watch Dogs a truely stand out title. 4/5

Resident Evil 7 biohazard

3. Resident Evil 7 biohazard

Completed 19/02/2017 Owing alot to PT, the latest entry in the Resident Evil series sees an overhaul on what survival horror is for the series and all in all it creates a very fresh and interesting narrative for the series. The Baker Estate is vast and getting around keeps things interesting with locals changing just when they're starting to get a little old. The story was engaging but overall the horror side of things wasn't exactly heart stopping - just the occasional mild jump scare. One boss fight was a bit frustrating for me, but overall, the game was a blast. 5/5

Mirror's Edge Catalyst

4. Mirror's Edge Catalyst

Completed 04/03/2017 The general idea for a game is to build on the intital mechanics throughout the experience. Mirrors Edge doesn't do this. Instead you have a world full of unnecessary padding with side quests that are just run from point A to point B - and they're designed for the sole purpose of stopping you from playing the main missions and sending you in the exact opposite direction. This is due largely to the fact that there are barely enough story missions to warrant a game. If you've played one level, you've played them all - they just don't evolve. 2/5

NieR:Automata

5. NieR:Automata

Completed 19/03/2017 Having been wow'ed by the original game and having had the same experience with the demo, I knew this was going to be a great game. Platinum brings their trademark combat to a game that is very much in keeping with the original yet carves its own path at the same time. Gorgeous soundtrack, lush environments, and a game that actively encourages multiple playthroughs. This could very well be a GOTY contender. 5/5

Horizon Zero Dawn

6. Horizon Zero Dawn

Completed 29/05/2017 A fantastic open world game with interesting story, characters, world, quests, side quests, errands and exploration. The amount you can do in this game is vast and with a play time for me of just under 44 hours - I feel I got my money's worth and then some. This is what an open world game should be. 5/5

The Walking Dead: The Telltale Series - A New Frontier

7. The Walking Dead: The Telltale Series - A New Frontier

Completed 04/07/2017 Telltale have really lost their way. The release schedule has never been handled well but this one was a nightmare. Not to mention that a majority of the content felt rushed and short. Where one moment had actual meaningful impact it was then all lost on a cheap situations where someone has to die no matter what. The NPC's just stand in as the dramatic murder victims. It didn't exactly leave me wanting more which is a shame as the first couple of series were incredibly strong. 3/5

Tekken 7: Fated Retribution

8. Tekken 7: Fated Retribution

Tekken is the best fighting game series around imo and Tekken 7 builds the franchise to near perfect - sure there are a few omissions on the roster but the new arrivals are a welcome addition. Online play has sucked me in for countless hours and many more to come. Here's hoping that final DLC character is Kiryu Kazuma. 5/5

Uncharted: The Lost Legacy

9. Uncharted: The Lost Legacy

Completed 26/08/2017 Naughty Dog does it again and proves we don't need Nathan to have a great Uncharted experience. The most stand out parts of Naughty Dog games to me are hidden in amongst the gunfire, the quieter moments, the characters that just come across so incredibly human when compared to most any other developer out there who can't write dialogue this good. Overall a fantastic experience that just leaves me wanting more. The pacing was tight and the build was very well done to leave you with one of the best final acts in gaming. Perhaps the best in all the uncharted games. 5/5

The Evil Within 2

10. The Evil Within 2

Completed 28/10/2017 The Evil Within 2 casts aside the somewhat janky controls of the first game and brings open world areas to the series while still keeping the tight pacing of the first one to create a truely great and creative survival horror experience. With call backs to the original, a fantastic story and good side missions that don't even over stay their welcome, The Evil Within 2 could be a top contender for my game of the year. 5/5
