I played a lot of games this year, but only a handful were actually released in 2010. Here are the best games I played for the first time this year that didn't necessarily come out this year.

I've enjoyed just about every platforming Mario game I've ever played (I'll defend Mario Sunshine any day of the week), but not since Super Mario World have I loved a Mario game so much.
This is what Halo 3 wishes it could've been in 2007.
I don't think I've enjoyed spending time with a game character more than with Nathan Drake.
I don't know why it takes me so long to get into Left 4 Dead games, but like its predecessor, I decided about 8 months after I bought it that it would be my game of choice for about a month and would get played for many weeks after that. It might not fully qualify for this list since I did play it some in 2009, but considering that 90% of my playtime has been in 2010, it belongs on this list.
