As time progresses, the character ages. A boy one moment, a man the next, soon the character is so old he's on the brink of death...
Alternate realities are worlds that exists next to, in parallel of, or in place of our own.
A different take on the commonplace video game death. Different ways to avoid death can include time travel, as in Prince of Persia; or a minigame, as in Prey.
Games that fit this category involve characters that can traverse different dimensions.
When will those crazy scientists learn? Be it killer robots, invasions from outer space, sentient computers or mutations; they always seem to have the habit of leaving a big mess behind for you to clean up.
A plot device where the story appears to be heading to a conclusion, but in reality there's still more to the story. For example, just when you think you've saved the world, the true final threat reveals itself. Often appears in Japanese RPG and visual novel titles.
Fate is a force in the background of all things that determines what is going to happen to the world and its characters. Many games incorporate fate as a vital component of the story or as a convenient plot device.
These games allow the character to see what is going to happen before the character actually gets there. This is normally done to give a unique perspective on the story
Games based on TV shows, which includes live-action and cartoons.
More commonly known as a "time loop", these games feature events that force the players through the cycle of repeating one (or a few) day(s). This is often presented as the result of time travel or other strange phenomena.
Nothing helps set a game in a specific point in time more than having a few famous faces from history drop by to say hi.
Korvax are a synthetic sentient race in No Man's Sky that were based on a now-destroyed planet called Korvax Prime in the Euclid Galaxy.
They may be good or evil, but mad scientists are always performing experiments that are on the outer fringes of science. Ever since Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, they've been in the scene.
The existence of a parallel world which can be traveled to and from, and may contain differences of varying degrees from its counterpart. Often, this concept consists of a Dark and Light World through which the player alternates.
Many games feature the concept of alternate dimensions. These can include the Physical, Astral, Elemental, and Ethereal among others depending on the theology. RPG's sometimes utilize these planes as the realms of gods.
Pokémon are creatures that inhabit the Pokémon universe and can be captured and trained for battle.
A portal is a hole in reality connected to another hole in reality, whether magical or scientific in nature, that allows a person to instantly travel incredibly vast distances simply by walking through one.
A race of crazy rabbits who star in Ubisoft's Raving Rabbids games, ended up getting their own spinoff series of games and a TV show, and often make cameo appearances in other Ubisoft games.
A Europe based research group which conducts research on physics with ulterior motives.
An alliance of nations who opposed the Axis powers in World War II. They included the USA, the United Kingdom, the USSR, France, and many others.
The Daleks are a race of mutant aliens from the planet Skaro, who travel in armoured metallic shell. They are the most iconic creatures in the popular British Sci-Fi show, Doctor Who, and have featured as the main antagonist in several Doctor Who games.
The Time Breakers are a team of villains in the Dragon Ball video games. Their goal is to disrupt specific events in time.
When a certain amount of time is given to the player to reach a goal or finish an objective.
The act of changing an event in the past that significantly alters further events leading up to the present. This is a major element of many stories involving time travel.
A time paradox is when a person who travels in time does something that influences their past self in a way that traveling in time in the first place would not be possible or not have occurred without the first intrusion.
A game mechanic that lets players pause and rewind the action in order to correct a mistake or change a path.
Time Stopping is the ability to stop the flow of time, stopping all movement from everyone but the person who used the ability.
The TimeSplitters are a semi-alien race who travel through time, space and dimensions. They are the main antagonists in the series and were created by Jacob Crow as "humankind's genetic superiors". There are five types of TimeSplitter in the whole series, all vastly different in appearance; no real explanation has ever been given as to why the TimeSplitters have changed so radically from game to game.
The Vex are a cyber-organic species in the Destiny universe, consisting of microscopic organisms suspended in liquid radiolaria that dwell inside robotic frames. The Vex are capable of advanced data processing, time travel, portal creation, and remarkable feats of engineering, but possess no sentience whatsoever.
A brainwashing transformation used by Démigra and the Time Breakers, which can bring anyone under their control and enhance their powers.
