Thu'um
CONCEPT
Introduced in Skyrim, Dragon Shouts are rare and powerful abilities performed by speaking aloud in a unique draconic language.

Dragon Shouts

Dragon Shouts, known as Dovahzaan in the Dragon Language, are ancient words of power in the fictional Dragon Language in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. In practice, they are essentially powerful spoken spells that have different effects. The player, being a Dovahkiin (Character), or Dragonborn in English, can recite several of these dragon shouts that have magical effects. While several other characters in the game are capable of using the dragon shouts, the player character is the only known Dovahkiin during the events of Skyrim, and is uniquely capable of learning Words of Power with ease and instantaneously unlocking their use by absorbing the souls of slain dragons with no effort (whereas non-Dragonborn characters would have to spend decades learning Shouts). Some of these Dragon Shouts will be found in certain dungeons within Skyrim and others can be learned from characters that already know them.

Absorbing a Dragon's Soul

The unique draconic language was created specifically for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. There is a thirty letter alphabet which is accompanied by a complete written script. It seems that the written form is heavily influenced by Cuneiform Script from 2400 BC. The written script was also made to look as though a creature with three talons, like a Dragon perhaps, could write it out. The vocal pronunciation is very earthy, heavy, and sharp by focusing on the hard sounds of letters like D, R, K, and V. Also, the additional six letters of the alphabet are merely represented as double vowels, like 'ii,' 'aa,' 'oo,' or specific vowel sounds like 'ah,' and 'oh.'

The language was created to have the same words rhyme in both English and Draconic. That doesn't necessarily mean that words that rhyme in English will have the same rhyming sound in Draconic, just that they will still rhyme with each other when translated to either language.
