Created by Lee Falk in 1936, The Phantom is a title inherited over generations in the Walker family, starting with Christopher Walker, born in 1516 who was shipwrecked off the coast of the fictional African country Bengal, where he was taken in by the natives and swore an oath to fight evil, and that his children should continue doing so after he dies.
He resides in a skull shaped cave and has a wolf companion named Devil.
The comics (as well as the games, TV show and movie) take place during different point over the more than 20 generations of Phantoms, often incorporating historical characters.
The Phantom character is also part of the superhero league Defenders of the Earth along with Mandrake (also created by Lee Falk) and Flash Gordon.
The comic became incredibly popular in Scandinavia following it's 1950 debut in Sweden, and original comics written for the Scandinavian audience started appearing in 1963, and saw English translations (primarily intended for publishing in Australia) a few years later.
Video Games
While several official The Phantom games have been in production, only one was ever finished - Phantom 2040 for the Genesis, SNES and Game Gear, based on the 1995 animated series of the same name.
Microïds also worked on a Game Boy Advance game when they filed for bankrupcy in 2003.
The Phantom was a playable character in the Defenders of the Earth game for Commodore 64, Atari ST and Amiga, released in 1990.
