Action RPG (Action Role-Playing Game), also known as ARPG, refers to RPGs (role-playing games) that use direct, real-time, reflex-oriented, action combat systems, instead of the more abstract turn-based or menu-based battle systems.
Instrumental music, often electronic, that does not follow conventional music structures, instead using various sounds to create a mood. Ambient music can evoke many different feelings in the listener, from tranquility to creeping dread.
When characters make conversation during normal gameplay, rather than a dialog-focused scene.
A mechanic used mainly in Japanese RPGs of both the action and turn-based variety.
Experience Points are part of a character advancement system commonly found in RPGs. These points are generally gained by defeating an enemy or completing a task.
You may think you know who you are playing as, but do you?
Japanese pop music, also known as J-Pop, refers to the most popular and mainstream music produced in Japan. It is commonly featured in many rhythm games as well as other genres.
The process by which characters reach a new level, gain greater attributes, and learn more abilities. It usually involves earning enough experience points by completing a variety of tasks such as quests or by "farming" such as killing other characters for their experience points.
A real-time battle system used in Namco Bandai's Tales franchise.
Games that allow characters to be switched with the press of a button. This concept's definition does not include player switching in team sports games.
Optional conversation-based cutscenes that are unrelated to the main narrative. These conversations are often humorous or provide insight into the game's setting.
Combat that takes place in real time, but that can be paused to give commands to certain characters.
Dungeons that are generated randomly.
Video game combat in which combat actions are performed in real-time, rather than through a turn-based structure.
A broad spectrum of games can be described as remakes, from straightforward graphical overhauls to extensive revision of gameplay and story elements. In the most basic sense, a remake keeps the original's core gameplay and plot but makes significant changes to peripheral aspects.
A game that is both a remake of a previous game and a sequel to it.
Romance in video games can either be interactive, in which the player attempts to woo another character, or an unchangeable part of the story of a given game.
A game that takes gameplay mechanics, characters, or story elements from an existing series in a separate and different direction, sometimes changing genres along the way.
An aesthetic sub-genre of fantasy, focusing on brutal barbarians and arcane wizardly magic.
A personality archetype with a name that arose from Japanese fandom. It describes a person with cold, aggressive, or confrontational exteriors that are rather soft or kind deep down inside.
