A fun and enjoyable return of a classic series. Yargh! 5

As a fan of the long running series, I was a bit worried when I first saw this game when they announced it. The graphics seemed not nearly as good as past games such as The Curse of Monkey Island. As soon as I played the game for the first time though all my worries were extinguished instantly. The game in motion looks just as you'd want it too and gives that Monkey Island feel to it.The game starts off with the same basic Monkey Island story line. Elaine, your beloved wife has been captured by ...

    Guybrush Threepwood Sails Again! 3

Tales of Monkey Island: The Launch of the Screaming Narwhal is a Monkey Island game, or, at least, the first part of one. It looks like a Monkey Island game, it sounds like a Monkey Island game, it feels like a Monkey Island game, and it plays like a Monkey Island game. For many readers, that will be all the review they need. For everyone else, however, a bit of perspective may be required. The name Monkey Island carries great weight in the community of those who love point-and-click adventure...

    Sheepwood? It's Threepwood! 1

I'm sure I haven't mentioned this to the people at Giantbomb; I am a gigantic Monkey Island fan. I first played Monkey Island at the tender age of 8 in 1990. Although I was young, I instantly fell in love with the atmosphere, story, humor, and characters. Sure, I may not have understood all of the jokes but something about the game clicked with me, whether it was the inside jokes such as the Loom reference(a game I actually played before Monkey Island) and the sequence in the stump where it asks...

A Great Relaunch of the Franchise 1

The original Secret of Monkey Island series is a worthy set of games to make a follow up to. Ever since the original release of the series in 1990, people have fallen in love with Guybrush Threepwood and his nemesis LeChuck. The previous Monkey Island games have gotten so much praise that Telltale Games decided a new follow up series was necessary. Telltale’s attempt to renew the series was an ambitious project that turned out to be pretty much what one would expect. There was a lot of pressure o...

After almost a decade of shore leave Guybrush Threepwood is at last hoisting the mainsails for a new piratey adventure, assisted this time by ragtag rabble of landlubbers Telltale Games and old seadogs, LucasArts. A handsome proposition to be sure, but is it shipshape enough to jibe with old buccaneers and aspiring young pirates alike? Our story opens off Flotsam Island, deep in the Caribbean. Ravaged by lee shore winds and surrounded by razor sharp reefs, Flotsam is a notorious nautical black sp...

Pirate comedy, gold or garbage? 0

Tales of Monkey Island, as some of you may know, is a re-boot of the classic monkey island franchise. Like most adventure games today, it's episodic, and it's made by Telltale Games, who have pretty much dominated the adventure game market recently, and have a handful of staff that used to work at Lucasarts.I played the game on PC, however it's also available for download in the Wii. As always, you play as Guybrush Threepwood, Mighty Pirate™, and yes, they use that trademark symbol jokingly in t...

"My Name Guybrush Threepwood and I'm a Mighty Pirate (tm)" 0

New logo for a new series If there was one game I regret not playing until now, its probably the first in the Monkey Island games from Lucasarts. These classic adventures are held among many as an example of a time when gameplay was more important than graphics. So it was quite controversial when Lucasarts announced that Tell Tale (makers of the new set of Sam and Max games as well as Wallace and Gromit) would be making a set of episodic games in the franchise. Has the first episode managed to b...

Like the quiche of destiny, it girds the loins. 0

If looking at the title of this review you are a little flummoxed but inexplicably aroused, Monkey Island is the game for you. Forgo this review and buy it if you tingle.  For the rest of you, less disturbed individuals I shall endeavour to moisten the thumb of destiny as we turn the pages of time....damn it monkey island, your ramblings and nonsensical puzzles have corrupted me like Paris Hilton has corrupted the youth of America. Let me get this out the way, I'd never played Monkey Island bef...

Tales of Monkey Island: Launch of the Screaming Narwhal 0

Tales of Monkey Island is another in a long string of successful adventure game series based on another license, although this one purports to have more of a focus on a continued storyline than a bunch of loosely connected episodes. So much so that at first you could only buy the whole thing as a package deal, although now individual episodes are for sale. The first chapter is one of the meatiest and most enjoyable the company has done, and I got a solid amount of enjoyment from it. The ...

A pirate's tale if me ever heard one! 0

While it's not my first adventure game, Tales of Monkey Island is probably the first one that I've actually begun getting into. Kind of a shame too since I always prefer a good story yet I ignore one of the main genres that focuses heavily on story. With pretty simple gameplay, adventures are mainly known for the storytelling so I figured "alright that does it, time to get into one". So missing the Steam sale but one day, I bought and begun playing Tales of Monkey Island with the first entry bei...

It retains the charm and wit of the series but the gameplay and v 0

Like many others, I am a huge fan of old school Lucasarts (and some Sierra) adventures, the tales of Guybrush Threepwood have been part of my gaming life a long time and the third part in the series (Curse of Monkey Island) is probably my favourite adventure of all time.Hence, I was delighted to hear that there would be a continuation of the series made by none other than former Lucasarts employees and even featuring some of the original voice cast (most importantly Guybrush himself).I did not g...
