The idea of deriving a feeling of pleasure through inflicting pain or suffering on another living being.
The Sanity Meter gives the player insight on exactly how close their character is to losing their mind. Doubled with strange effects when the meter is low, the Sanity Meter can really start messing with you.
Scaring in a video game involves allowing a playable character to scare other characters within the game, inflicting fear on their puny souls. Examples: Haunting Starring Polterguy, Geist.
Scary Children in scary games. Some speak, some don't but they all stare.
Often found in either very violent games, or games taking place in or around water, Screen Splatter is a visual representation of blood, water, strawberry jam, or other liquids temporarily obscuring the player's field of vision.
One who murders three or more people within a relatively short time span.
With the advent of dynamic lighting, some games allow the player to remain hidden by simply using the shadows instead of the line of sight.
The skeleton is the framework of the human body.
A person incapable of feeling emotion and empathy, though they may fake displaying such in order to fit into society. Their inability to empathize make them potentially dangerous as they lack the ability to feel guilt or remorse for cruel acts committed against others.
The player goes to an ordinary, seemingly benevolent small town, only to find that there are some very strange things afoot there...
Many horror-themed games feature characters uttering despondent noises; this includes screaming, sobbing, and moaning.
Using stealth often requires the player to accomplish their objective without being detected by enemies. Methods of detection can vary from game to game, and can be based on an enemy's line of sight, how quiet the player is, or even how the player interacts with the environment.
Strategic dismemberment allows players to separate an enemy's limbs from its body without killing it, disabling limb-specific functions.
Survival is a concept that signifies that the player's life is constantly in jeopardy.
The main antagonist of F.3.A.R., the Creep is a hideous manifestation of Harlan Wade, born from the traumatic memories of the abuse inflicted upon Alma and her sons the Point Man and Paxton Fettel.
It's the designer's go-to guy. If they want to steer a player in a given direction they'll lock an in game door and force the player to find a way to either unlock it or find an alternate route.
Anguish of body or mind. Can be used by authority figures to extract sensitive information that would not be given under normal circumstances.
Bosses that are designed to not be beaten; however, sometimes these bosses can finally be beaten at a later point in the game.
The Undead is an umbrella term describing creatures that do not exhibit the key fundamental attributes that are associated with life, such as respiration, and blood circulation. They are divided into two main categories: Ethereal and Corporeal, depending on whether or not they have a body.
When a populated area is overrun by legions of the undead. They are often accompanied by demons or parasitic lifeforms.
Don't believe anyone. There's more going on here than is immediately apparent.
Vampires are undead, nocturnal creatures that subsist on blood. They have superhuman powers and are sometimes able to shape-shift. They are weak against sunlight, foreign objects stuck in and left in their hearts, decapitation and sometimes holy water and crosses.
In order to circumvent various obstacles, some protagonists must travel through ventilation systems.
A visual obstruction is an extra layer added to the player's viewpoint. Most common in first person games to add to the notion that you are looking through a character's eyes. Obstructions include blood, water and ice crystals.
Games with organic tissue covering or growing out of the walls (or floor). Typically seen in horror games. This concept does not cover situations where characters are actually inside larger organic beings.
Werewolves are humans that can shapeshift into wolves or wolf-like creatures. They often have strength and senses that surpasses those of both humans and wolves.
Witches are women who can perform magic. There can be good witches and bad witches.
Zombies, more accurately called the walking dead, are reanimated corpses who feed on the living, and have become a ubiquitous video game enemy. They often move slowly, but can be deadly in large numbers, which is unfortunately how they tend to travel. Shotgun time!
