How do people think DRM not going away is a good thing? whatever...also, I'm totally against pirating games, especially when its new stuff( if someone pirates a game from 96' or something, its not a huge deal) and more so especially when its promising enough, like Spore or any new decent PC game released recently or in the future...but EA totally fucked theirselves over with this, and I really could care a less in this matter..they had it coming.

    @Original Post.

Spore Sales could reach 2 Million before October
Spore Creature Creator (not full game) top of sales charts
Spore doing well in first week

According to Sporepedia there are 1,588,755 Registered Users (need a valid Serial Number to become a registered user), 24,936 new registered users in the last 24 hours, 19,506,310 Total Creations by said registered users, 994,929 new creations by said registered users in the last 24 hours. These are stats from the registered, product-purchased community.

That is just the PC versions of Spore, there are also Spore releases for Mobile and Nintendo DS.

Spore is a financial success regardless of piracy data. Will Wright has said that sales are more important than review scores. With the prospect of reaching the +2 Million Sales mark before October that would make Spore being Maxis's fastest selling game in history, outselling The Sims 2 in the same amount of time and making Spore one of the best selling PC titles of 2008.

EA has not been 'pwned' by downloaders.

not the best, but a good working solution...release all games on steam....if you sell it on the disc...force the person to install steam and run the game through steam yadda yadda ya! Boom, not full proof but better.

The only people the pirates are "pwning" are themselves. Because now the next DRM is going to be even worse than Spore.

If you look at it that way, then the cycle will really only just continue. It doesn't matter what kind of DRM EA includes with future games, it WILL be bypassed and put up on torrents. Hopefully EA will realize that this rampant piracy on Spore (and the harsh Amazon backlash) is a direct result of their retarded 3-install DRM scheme and get rid of it because it doesn't hurt the pirates, and that it only hurts the people who actually buy the game.

If you can make it, you can crack it.

no amount of DRM or any other anti-piracy software will keep a game from being pirated and cracked.

Is there any update to this news piece? I'd like to see how many have downloaded now, EA might have did really good with spore but I think they could have done alot better if it weren`t for putting that shitware in with the game.

I have observed that game developers that notice that no anti piracy stuff works, then use 100% no piracy protection. But still they can get decent sales. Galactic Civ is massive. Oblivion didnt even have a Cd check and it did pretty damn well.

And the lesson of this story is if you want your game to sell, make it worth buying.

Link to a list of best selling PC games in history

Spore has sold almost 2 Million copies in it's first month (according to registered users on the Sporepedia, which you need a legit CD Key for), putting it above Bioshock already, as well as Quake 2, Red Alert 2, Duke Nukem 3D; games released a decade ago, and in the same sales-league as Civilization 2, Diablo, Mafia; after its' first month. If it sells over 4 Million it will be in the Top 10 best selling PC games of all time, with the track record of The Sims and The Sims 2 (50 Million and 13 Million respectively) it's easy to see the future of Spore in terms of sales, it shall go down as one of the best selling PC games ever, EA is a wallstreet company, it only cares about the sales. It's making money, the end.

In terms of EA doing better if they did not have 'shitware' as you put it, Bioshock had the same SecuRom protections and it was a success on the PC with just over 1 Million sold so far; which is a success in the PC realm. Crysis has sold just over 1.5 Million copies despite being 'hugely pirated', another success in the PC Realm. Neverwinter Nights launched with SecuRom (later patches out after 12 months of retail), it sold 2 Million copies; another PC realm success. The average PC game sells under 1 Million copies in its' entire lifespan, to achieve that 1 Million mark is a huge achievement.
In the case of Bioshock, overall sales; on X360 and PC, combined was 2.2 Million, so effectively it sold half of it's copies on the PC despite having SecuRom protections including limited reinstalls, similar to Spore.
Two games, one developed by Stardock and the other published by Stardock, Galactic Civilizations and Sins of a Solar Empire both have zero copy protections, neither have achieved the +1 Million mark in terms of sales.
Lack of DRM does not make sales.
Inclusion of DRM does not cancel sales.
Games are bought by what's on the back of the box, we are the hardcore but the average consumer just looks at the back of the box, has no idea what SecuRom is, no idea what NES stands for, no idea who Peter Moore is, no idea that Han Solo shot first, no clue at all about anything we take for granted in terms of personal knowledge because we are the hardcore. SecuRom isn't going anywhere, and games with SecuRom do not fail in terms of sales due to the inclusion of it.

The option not to create more than one online account is bullshit.

It makes it harder to give this pos kids game to my little sister.

not happy with what i have after a $99 purchase.

Don't tell me you bought Spore and didn't expect EA to do something like that? Also POS kids game is a harsh comment, as if you didn't know what you were getting into when you went to the website, or looked at the front of the box and were surprised that it looks like something from Pixar rather than Alien Vs. Predator. I knew what I was getting into ever since 2005, Spore would be "the shit" but it would look cartoony and the gameplay itself will be very toned down. The real meat is the games editors, and if you spend enough time with them it's like a dream for content designers.

The gameplay probably won't be refined even in expansion packs, instead it will be further marketed towards casual players, but that's to be expected from a Maxis game.

There is a difference between Bioshock's DRM system and EA's DRM system.  Bioshock limited you to 5 activations, and you could redeem them when you uninstall the game (they have actually removed the activation limit now). With EA's, you only get 3 activations, which are non-redeemable. That's what sucks about it.

Link here to where it states that initially Bioshock's activiations were limited to TWO at launch.
BioShock for Windows (both the retail version and that available through Steam) utilizes SecuROMcopy protection software, and requires internet activation to complete installation. This was reportedly responsible for the cancellation of a midnight release in Australia on August 23, 2007, due to 2K Games servers being unavailable, as the game would be unplayable until they were back online. Through SecuROM, users were originally limited to two activations of the game.

Users found that even if they uninstalled the game prior to reinstallation, they were still required to call SecuROM to re-activate the game.

The issue was worsened by the fact that the incorrect telephone number had been included in the printed manual, as well as essentially forcing customers outside the United States to make expensive international calls to the US. In response, 2K Games and SecuROM increased the number of activations to five before requiring the user to call again. However, as no information had been provided by 2K on the existence of these measures prior to the game going on sale, or on the retail box of the game itself, many remain dissatisfied. Users also found that it was necessary to activate the game for each user on the same machine, which was criticized by some as an attempt to limit customers' fair use rights. 2K Games has denied that this was the intent of the limitation.
Bioshock had the same initial SecuROM DRM as Spore, even having non-redeemable activations, it was patched however to allow redeemable uninstalls and it was also patched to allow more activations from two to five. EA has stated similar patching shall occur with Spore.
Link here to stats regarding people reinstalling Spore, as well as Mass Effect; another game with similar DRM.

      Mass Effect
      • Total activations: 183313
      • Users activating on only 1 machine: 77%
      • Users activating on more than 1 machine: 23%
      • User trying to activate on more than 3 machines: 0.9%

      Spore Creature Creator
      • Total activations: 453048
      • Users activating on only 1 machine: 77%
      • Users activating on more than 1 machine: 23%
      • Users trying to activate on more than 3 machines: 1%

      Spore (main game)
      • Total activations: 437138
      • Users activating on only 1 machine: 86%
      • Users activating on more than 1 machine: 14%
      • User trying to activate on more than 3 machines: 0.4%
