Sonya Blade is a Lieutenant (later promoted to general) in an unnamed U.S. Special Forces unit, and part of the Outer World Investigation Agency. She was the only female fighter in the original tournament, and has gone on to become one of the major characters in the Mortal Kombat universe. Through the various games she is especially close friends with Major Jackson " Jax" Briggs, and enemies with Kano.

    Story

    Mortal Kombat

Sonya and her team are in hot pursuit of Kano, the leader of the Black Dragon organization. Following Kano as he jumps onto a ship, they find themselves taken to Shang Tsung's island. Sonya agrees to compete in the tournament, believing it will keep her team safe. Despite being defeated by Liu Kang, Shang Tsung is able to have Sonya's team killed, and then kidnaps both her and Kano.

    Mortal Kombat II

While she does not appear as a playable character, Sonya is the reason Jackson "Jax" Briggs appears in this game. Despite being kidnapped at the end of the first game, Sonya has been able to send a signal to Jax, who is able to travel to Outworld to find her. Once there, Jax makes contact with the other Earthrealm warriors, and joins their fight in an attempt to find Sonya. He is able to find and free Sonya after the tournament ends, and they make their way back to Earthrealm with Kano in custody. In the confusion of the return however, Kano is able to escape back into Outworld.

    The Kiss of Death
    The Kiss of Death

Despite their warnings, Sonya and Jax are unable to convince the government that the threat of Shao Kahn's invasion is real. When the invasion happens, they are among the few humans who do not lose their souls to Shao Kahn. In the process of fending off the invasion, Sonya inevitably encounters Kano. They engage in battle on the rooftop of a skyscraper near Shao Kahn's stronghold. During the course of the fight, Kano appears to gain the upper hand. Sonya plays possum to draw Kano in, and when he takes the bait, she uses her leg-grab attack to throw Kano off the roof. The last she sees of him, Kano appears to have fallen to his death, holding nothing but a handful of her hair.

    Mortal Kombat 4

After the events of the last MK games, Sonya becomes a member of the newly formed Outworld Investigation Agency (OIA). During the course of her duties, she and Jax chase a member of the Black Dragon into Edenia. Once there they encounter Raiden and Liu Kang. The four of them team up against the Fallen Elder God, Shinnok, to free the realm and to prevent him from coming to Earth. After Shinnok's defeat, Sonya and Jax return to Earth, where they find the cyborg Cyrax malfunctioning in a desert. The two bring the cyborg back to the OIA headquarters where they are able to restore Cyrax's humanity. In return, Cyrax joins the agency.

    Deadly Alliance

While on assignment demolishing ancient inter-realm portals in the East, Sonya receives a message from Jax that the Outworld Investigation Agency (OIA) has been completely destroyed by an accomplice of Shang Tsung and Quan Chi. They assume that a new threat is on its way, but without the portals, they have no way to intercept the attack. Sonya is later visited by Raiden, who asks for her help against the new threat. Sonya agrees to join her old friend and ally, but is concerned that with the destruction of the portals, there would be no way to leave Earthrealm. Raiden instructs her to meet with the other heroes on the island where the first Mortal Kombat game took place. Arriving on the island, Sonya is greeted by Kung Lao. He seems depressed, but does not offer any explanation. They spar on the beach to pass the time waiting for Raiden, and an explanation.

Shortly, a small boat apparently formed of ice, floats to shore. It holds two passengers, Sub-Zero and his pupil, Frost. Sonya is not excited to see Frost. While it isn't really explained, their first meeting was not a pleasant one. Feeling they have a score to settle, the two fight. Sonya wins the fight, easily beating the novice warrior.

Despite Frost wanting a rematch, the others convince her and Sonya that there are more important issues. Raiden then appears and transports the heroes to a celestial portal to Outworld. This is a different type of portal from ones used previously; anyone passing through has to defeat a representation of his or her worst adversary. Sonya assumes that she will be fighting Frost, but is surprised that she instead ends up fighting a complete stranger who has an image of a red dragon on his back. She passes this test, and continues through the portal to face the deadly alliance. Sonya does not survive this encounter however. during the course of the battle, she, Johnny Cage and Jax are overwhelmed by the Deadly Alliance's Tarkatan forces, and killed.

The Deadly Alliance's victory was short-lived, however as the Dragon king Onaga arrives, and reclaims Outworld. With his ability to raise the dead at will, Onaga resurrects and enslaves Sonya and the others. Since Sonya and the others appear normal in the Armageddon game, there's a good chance that sometime after being raised, some part of Ermac's Armageddon ending (where he frees her and several others with Liu Kang's help) became cannon.

    Armageddon

Sonya has returned to Earth after Onaga's defeat with the intention of continuing her assault on both Red and Black Dragon clans. She quickly finds herself forced to focus on the Tekunin instead. During her absence, the Tekunin presence had grown large enough to disrupt Earth civilization, and had violated Earthrealm law by engaging in illegal inter-realm activities. Sonya is forced to divert all of her resources to the immediate threat, despite her wishes. Soon after joining the fight, she is able to help take down a Tekunin ship under the command of Sektor himself. Despite the destruction of the ship, Sonya sends a team lead by her partner Jax to hunt for any survivors. During this mission, Jax and his team suddenly vanish from all scanners, and are assumed dead or captured.

Sonya then begins to focus on discovering who outside of Earthrealm might be helping the Tekunin. In the course of her search, she discovers a homing beacon that she knows is of Tekunin origin; following that signal she ends up in Arktika where she confronts Taven. Assuming the worst, she tries to get information out of him about Sektor, the Tekunin, and their plans. Proclaiming she has full authority over him, Sonya is unwilling to trust the Edenian warrior. Since Taven will not yield to her, they fight. Taven wins the fight, but does not kill Sonya, who warns him that she'll be watching him even as she retreats from the fight.

    Mortal Kombat

When Sonya’s father, a U.S. Marine, never returned from a covert operations mission, Sonya swore that she would honor his memory by joining the Marines as well. Her skills and loyalty earned her the respect and admiration of all those who fought beside her, and pushed her through the ranks. Sonya still wishes to uncover the truth behind her father’s disappearance, though she realizes she might never really know. Now caught up in mysterious Mortal Kombat tournament, she finds herself in a similar situation as her father.

Sonya's story during the first two thirds of the game mostly parallels that of her involvement in the first two games. She arrives on Shang Tsung's island in search of Kano and has become a participant in the Mortal Kombat tournament as a cover for her true goal; rescuing her comrade Jackson Briggs. She manages to rescue him with help from Raiden, Johnny Cage, and others, but is unable to bring Kano to justice.

Following Earthrealm's victory in the tournament, Sonya returns to the Shaolin temple with the others, but is captured when Outworld forces invade. She's rescued from her intended fate as a sacrifice, but is forced to return to Earthrealm early when Jax has his arms brutally torn off by Ermac. When the Outworld forces invade in earnest in the final third of the game, she assists the other Earthrealm warriors gathered by Raiden to defend against the invasion and is one of the few to live to see the end.

Sonya Blade in Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe
    • Energy Rings: Sonya bring her wrists together and sends out colored rings that explode on impact and leave drops of energy to dissolve on the ground.
    • Leg Grab: Sonya performs a handstand, bends her legs to grab her opponent around the waist, and then springs back the other way to slam them into the ground.
    • Square Wave Punch: Sonya jumps into the air and zips across the screen to punch anyone currently in the air. While she doesn't disappear, this can also be used in an emergency similar to a teleport to get her out of harms way.
    • Vertical Bicycle Kick: Just like it sounds, Sonya performs Liu Kang style bicycle kick, except that it goes almost straight up.
    • Air Leg Throw: Somewhat similar to the Leg grab, Sonya uses this attack to grab someone out of the air and pound them into the ground.
    • Cartwheel Kick: Sonya performs a cartwheel at her opponent, kicking them on impact.
    • Kiss of Death: Adapted from her fatality, this attack stuns her opponent and allows for a free hit.
    • Armed Forces: Sonya shoots a purple projectile at her opponent.
    • Flying Boots: Again borrowing a move from Liu Kang, Sonya delivers a flying kick.

    Fatalities

Kiss of Death: Sonya destroys her opponent by blowing them a kiss. In MK3, the kiss becomes a purple orb, crushing the opponent and leaving behind a pile of blood and bones. In MK4, it takes the form of an energy ball and slices the opponent in half. In Deadly Alliance, the kiss is a purple poisonous mist, which makes her opponent choke and vomit out organs, food, and blood.

    Non-Fatality Finishing moves

    • Friendship 1 - Sonya performs some exercises
    • Friendship 2 - Sonya salutes, and flowers spring up around her
    • Animality - Sonya turns into a giant hawk; she picks up her opponent, and shreds them.
