So yesterday in the Happy Hour chat, there was some discussion about the SimCity series and which the best one is. The majority of people (myself included) said 2000. One or two insane people *Cough*ZombiePie*Cough* said 3000. So what say you Giant Bomb, what is your favourite SimCity game?
Assume that all the expansion packs & any other additions to the games are included.
SimCity
A celebrated series of open-ended city building simulation titles created by Will Wright and Maxis, the SimCity franchise began in 1989.
What is your favourite SimCity game?
2000 without a doubt. Was such a step forward in graphics. Plus, you could import your city to Sim Copter. Now that's some shit you don't see anymore.
Sim City 4. Only because that was the first one where I actually took the time to try to understand and play the game as a game and not just build a neighborhood of crack houses with no schools and hospitals and wonder why crime is through the roof.
3000, sorry. It's just the one I have most experience playing.
I don't know how many times I tried 2000 and 3000 as a kid to build a city and failed. It took until I got 4 to understand how things work. I think I spent too much money on utilities and stuff without zoning enough.
I haven't really played a SC game for awhile, but just bought SC4 from the steam sale, interesting.. but laggy with complex areas.
SimCity Classic, or the 1997 PC rerelease of the original. Dunno if I'd say favourite, but it was the one I owned and the one I spent most time with.
SimCity 4. With all the mods, and the continuing support from the community, I've easily put well over 100 hours into that game.
I've of cause played a ridiculous amount of the original when I was a kid... But of the later versions it's differently 3000 that has held my attention the most.
" The SNES version of the first game.MILLION DOLLAR CODE, BITCHES! "People who have only played the SNES version are not SimCity fans. They are wanna bees. That game was not SimCity. Real SimCity games feature zoning not that drag and drop bullshit.
SimCity 3000 is the best because it had a builing editor, great mod support, and you could select the style of architecture for your buildings. The scenario mode was great. Finally zoning. Zoning is where it is at.

People who think that 2000 is better than 3000 are delusional. Acropolises broke the game and made it so is that you could suddenly just make everyone like you with one building. That's not the spirit of SimCity.
Finally 3000 had the better music HANDS DOWN! In fact it is up there as one of my favorite soundtracks of all time. Concrete Jungle and Illumination (the post disaster song) are great songs:
While I have many memories of playing the original Simcity on my PC and SNES, Simcity 2000 really just takes the cake when it comes to the depth and breadth that was added to the game. Too many great memories of late game greatness with the amount of things you can build. Some might complain about the addition of waterworks and subways metro, but I still loved all of it.
I have a lot of fond memories of Sim City, and Sim City 2000 (which I played for at least a thousand hours over the years). By the time Sim City 3000 came along, I enjoyed it but just didn't play it as much. I got back into it with Sim City 4, which is (in my opinion) the best of them for a lot of reasons, but mostly because of the mods available and the user community that even now continues to add more to the game. I'd still be interested in a new version, but I understand that's not something likely to happen anytime soon. Sim City Societies was a complete non-entity for me. It wasn't anything like the other games and didn't really deserve the name.
I don't really like any of the sim city games. That may make me a heretic in the eyes of some, but to me any of Will Wright's Sim_____ style of games were always 4X without the part where you eventually build a giant fleet of spaceships and murder everyone. Just endless, endless management.
I never played Sim City 3000, so I can't speak of how good it was. It might have been better than 2000, since all I can remember hearing about it was how it kept the tradition of 2000 and just improved upon it.
Haven't played Societies either, though I can't say I've heard anything good about it. Sim City 4 was pretty good, and I really never got in to the original Sim City despite having the PC version back in the early 90's.
The best Sim* game ever imho is Sim Isle though. That game had an amazing soundtrack and some really interesting mechanics.
SimCity 2000 is definitely the best. It's the most revolutionary of the series, and had so much depth it was frankly amazing it was released in 1994. I still have the original Electronic Arts box with the original EA logo and instructional manuals. The main manual has 140 pages. Any game that has a manual with over 100 pages must be incredible.
