Unfinished: Overwatch 11/18/2015

Brad and Dan battle girls in robot suits, cyborg ninjas, and dudes on roller blades to get a star on the walk of fame.

Sometimes we look at a game before it's done. When that's the case? Well... it must be Unfinished.

Remember when we were all "What's Blizzard gonna do after WoW? They're never gonna make that much cash again."

Oh, how naive we were.

I wonder how much this game will earn them. It's kind of a weird business model, a 60 dollar arena shooter in a time where free arena shooters like TF2 exist. People will either back out of it because of the price tag or just buy the standard price of a game. There's not really a way to earn them that extra cash that keeps flowing in after a while. It's a nice looking game but the game modes look too much like TF2 and I doubt it will be enough to convince people to buy it over other games of its genre.

Since there's also no Daily objectives (although this might change, if they're smart) or level progression that leads to neat unlocks or something to look forward too I wonder if it has any staying power, much like Battlefront.

Just remember, none of that stuff existed in HoTS early on, either. Talent Trees, Skills, Abilities, Leveling Up; these were all different during Alpha/Beta. I would be quite surprised if Blizzard doesn't add some sort of leveling system, maybe to just superficially add weight to progression. With it being at $60/$40, though, I doubt we'll see abilities locked behind levels, though. Maybe a similar system where skin/mount color variants require a specific hero level, etc.

@saltykind: There have been indications of leveling systems and progression coming, but with all of the rewards being cosmetics, sprays, titles, etc and nothing relating to gameplay.

Also so far they've been claiming microtransactions will also be solely cosmetic.

So... like they are obviously going to be selling lots of heroes and skins for this right? Everyone seems surprised that it's not f2p, but it seems like it is going for more of a best of both worlds approach.

$40 gets you a good bunch of heroes and they steadily release more for $5 each (or $10 if we're being honest, it's activison/blizzard after all ). Anyway, that's what I think they are going to do.

Can't wait to play, looks fun.

They don't mean that it's literally a MOBA, just that the big amount of "heroes" with different, unique abilities feels very MOBA-ish.

Just a comment on something Brad said about always spawning at the start, in the payload mode where you have to move the payload you have closer spawn points as you move it along.

not for me as I like more control and coordination in my fps I mean I would have been trying to use the voice to coordinate teams and such. But then I never played quake so ...and yup if Dan gave anime a try he would enjoy a lot of it.

This doesn't make much sense. I mean brad played poorly, but he had that whole talking thing to do.

The way the game should generally be played is with coordination and voice chat and the like. It works much, much better if everybody is working together on the objectives, and picking their heroes based off of what the other people are using. Should watch some other videos elsewhere of how the game is really played.

@koolaid: They will be selling skins but for now they are saying there will be no hero store. If they do add heroes (we know they likely will be) my guess is it will be in larger group expansion packs rather than the f2p hero store style. They have been pretty insistent that there wont be gameplay affecting microtransactions and have specifically said no individual heroes for sale.

I'm not sure why they're putting that out on consoles or for 60$. Everything about this screams TF2 and that game was no fun on a controller. It also only came into its own when it went F2P.

It seems Blizzard is just charging money for it because they can but it doesn't seem to come with anything you would want out of fully priced product.

Yeah this is how I feel, I feel like it's a product that will obviously go into the F2P model but of course they would say they have no plans of doing that up front to recoup some money back for having worked on titan. They also said they have no plans of adding new heroes but I also don't buy that. How long it'll be until they go F2P though... it's gonna be a long wait :(

Why do I get the feeling Brad imagines TF2 is the exact same game that was released in 2007?

Anyway, this looks fantastic and may be the game that finally replaces TF2 for me personally. I didn't even know about this until this QL, I probably got it confused with that awful effort by Gearbox.

not gonna drop full price on a soon-to-be-f2p shooter, not after Titanfall and Evolve taught me that a multiplayer only title at full price = dead in 6 months

it'll either be dead or f2p, so why regret paying in the first place?

FYI, one of the builder/engineer characters can construct a teleporter. Sadly no one played her (Symmetra), which is shame because she's cool. The long travel time from the spawn to the objective is definitely a balance thing, which makes playing characters with movement abilities a better choice in those scenarios.

It's not just the champions and abilities that make for the MOBA comparison (and TF2 but its been so freaking long so im not gonna make a comparison here), it's the surprising amount of strategy that there is to this game. It's not just about the mechanics and kills, like in a MOBA.

Blizzard dev teams been playing matches against twitch streamer teams/groups and early on in the beta VERY rarely, if ever, did a twitch team beat, or hell, ever even contest the devs... and the devs mention why: this game is not just mechanics, those streamers have the mechanics down (many CS pros and all) but they failed on playing the map and that's how the bliz teams could dominate.

this game is heavy on strategy: how to play the champs, knowing which comps to play and the champ roles, which champs counter who, which champs are best in what maps/situations, map awareness (choke-points, sniping positions, attacking routes, defense positions), how to play the map and the objectives and so on.

Brad doesn't know it but the objectives are a HUGE part of this game, kills =/= wins, ur team has to know how to deliver/defend/capture the payload/objective to win the game. He talked about modes but there is no team death-match, the game (the devs talked about why there is less game modes in blizzcon panel) is to capture objectives and/or deliver/defend a payload.

@voidox: That sounds like Counter-Strike or any arena based FPS to me. Knowledge of the map in Quake, CS and TF2 are just as important as knowing the mechanics.
