Outlast 2's entire premise and setting is just kinda dumb and hard to believe. By the end of the game they finally explain the flashback storyline of the guy's childhood, but most of the present day storyline goes completely unexplained even by the very end, which kinda paints it as an unreliable narrator situation since some of the stuff in the final chapters is absurd, by which I mean it is duuuuuuuuuumb. The game's entire gimmick of Christian cult town that murders babies gets played out really quick, and the outdoor rural environments just kinda suck. Agreed that it's a bad game.

Also, the general vibe of Outlast 2 is just gross. Outlast 1 is just kinda mad science that was unethical but only really spiraled out of control in the last like 6 hours leading up to when your guy gets there, whereas Outlast 2 is about like months and years of ongoing abuse and infanticide that isn't scary, and instead is just something I'd rather not think about.

I still think Outlast has one of the absolute dumbest late-game reveals of all time. I don't even know if I like it because it loops back around so many times on the "this is bad" -> "you know what, maybe this is the kind of stupid I can get behind" -> "actually no, this just sucks" -> "although I can almost respect how much it goes for it..." scale.

MAJORspoilers for the end game (specifically, the nature of The Walrider)

I love this game. I can embrace the crazy sometimes, and with glee. The atmosphere is one of the best in a horror game ever I think.

Never noticed this before, but Abby's clip in the intro shows her in front of a stack of Mass Effect 2 boxes. That made me chuckle!

Abby plays horror games like I play horror games. I feel like less of a wuss now.

Horror and asylum stories always irritate me the laziest option is abandoned hospitals or asylums. Look at haunted hotel in games like vampire bloodlines and you can easily do horror in any other setting without introducing wild medical and ahem "experiments"

@bbalpert: I don't know. I find nanomachines to be infinitely more interesting in horror than the options you listed as possibilities. Been there done all that.

I thought Outlast was a great horror game that really succeeded in what it set out to do. Then that ending... Oh man, that ending.

@jerk:I don't necessarily think it's inherently less interesting, it's just that it seems to come completely out of nowhere. Unless I missed a TON of logs and journals, I'm pretty sure that conversation at the end is the first time you hear about ANY of that stuff.

It's like if Citizen Kane was completely unchanged, but the Rosebud reveal at the end was that "he was saying 'Ro zbu-dd', an ancient and powerful incantation. Oh by the way, Charles Foster Kane has been a powerful warlock this whole time. Weird how that never came up earlier."

Love this series, but even if it was shite it would be worth it for that intro.

All the different ways that Abby slides into frame at the beginning cracks me up.

I think outlast is the most overrate game of all time. It's easy jump scares that wear out after 15 minutes. The A.I is also so dumb that you can run right by them and lose them just as fast. I played about two hours of this and only because I was streaming. It's not a good horror game.

If the game didn't look the way it did, it'd be a 5 dollar steam game.

This is the best thing about Halloween.

Now I want to see Load Our Last Souls for Dark Souls 3 with Abby on controller duty!

Sweet! I was hoping they would play Outlast. It's one of my favorite horror games. Also, this video series is awesome. Abby rules!

Yes! I managed to get the Energizer achievement in this game - beat the game on insane mode (dying sends you back to the very beginning) without reloading camera batteries - and I will forever brag about that on any Outlast video. This was a fun watch! Thanks, Abby/Vinny!

Watching Abby freak out is extremely entertaining. Thank you for putting yourself through this for our morbid enjoyment.

My favourite moment is when it's pissing with rain and you're outside being hunted by you-know-who. The mood, sound effects, and pacing are really heart-pumping.

It's more than jump-scares. It has a great atmosphere, the night vision mechanic, running the hell away (which always reminds me of that scene in Kill List, remember that?), and it inspired games like Resi 7 in obvious ways. It's a very good game with some story weaknesses, but there are many, many memorable moments that don't simply go, "peek-a-boo," and play a loud sound.

Abby, not sure if you read the comments, but you are a great part of this team. Please keep doing what you do!

I find it real hard to watch games like this played with a controller. All those jittery janky movements are awful.

I disliked Outlast 2 because I would be turned around in circles in the dark outdoors. I got lost plenty of times. Also, the baddies weren't that interesting. There's a woman I barely saw. In 1 and the DLC, there's the big hulking dude, the Groom, and the cannibal with the buzzsaw.

It's obviously common to all horror media but it's soooooo dumb. Find a better way to get your protagonist into horror land! This is why I appreciate FEAR a bit more, your protagonist rolls in loaded to rumble with all the backup in the world only to realize stuff's actually even more bad than anyone knew.
