...or how Retro is bringing DK back, at least that's how the rumour goes.
IGN with the original story.
I did see this on GAF though, which made me incredibly excited. It's an insane idea, but it somehow seems to make so much sense. Retro did amazing work bringing Metroid back, with Prime 1 being among the finest games of last gen. They haven't released anything substantial since Prime 3 in 2007. It's also being somewhat validated by a 'Retro insider' on GAF who apparently broke MP: Trilogy before it was ever announced.
I'm secretly hoping for a follow-up to DK 64. My cousin's place was always the Nintendo household back in the day, while we were mainly Sega and subsequently Playstation. I remember putting in some serious time on the SNES and then the N64. I was hooked on that game everytime I visited for a long period, while I couldn't get into Mario 64 and it passed me by. Later I played DK Country on the Game Boy Color, but the 2D games never grabbed me in the same way, and the recent ones on the Gamecube didn't seem interesting either.
Of course that will never happen though, and the gameplay probably doesn't hold up any more. Given the Retro treatment however, it could end up going in some weird/amazing direction, the prospect of which excites me even more.
So what do you guys think? Excited? Stupid idea? Donkey Kong Country for life?
I think i'll have this song on repeat until tuesday.
Retro Studios
Company »
Retro Studios is a Nintendo-owned developer. Their first game was Metroid Prime, a first-person reimagining of the Metroid franchise. More recently, they revived the Donkey Kong Country series in Donkey Kong Country Returns.
"He's finally back, to kick some tail."
A DK64 sequel would be sick. I spent about 90 hours on it back when it came out, and would love another one.
I think Retro has proven they know how to revive a series.
DK was best in the hands of western developers, and I can think of no Nintendo focused western studio more capable than Retro to bring back one of my favorite franchises.
Never cared for Donkey Kong post-Donkey Kong Country. Even it's sequels didn't really interest me. He's really not that great of a character, actually. I mean, what's so great about him? He's a gorilla, he wears a tie, and eats bananas. I'd rather see Nintendo do something new, after all, RARE aren't going to be making this game.
All Nintendo mascots seem pretty shallow and uninteresting as far as their character goes, but it doesn't prevent amazing gamesfrom being made." Never cared for Donkey Kong post-Donkey Kong Country. As much as i'd also appreciate something new from them, Nintendo has too many franchises that have yet to be brought to the Wii like F-Zero, Starfox, and Kirby. I suppose the DK games have never consistently shared characteristics, so there isn't any defined idea of a 'DK game' like there is with a 'Mario game'. Still, this could be the game to do it.
Like I said, I haven't been interested in Donkey Kong since the N64, so i'm all for him having another spin at any rate. I remain excited for now, at least until we see something from Retro, who I have faith in. That's all assuming this rumour does turn out to be true, and even then, it might not show at E3.
" @Diamond: It's been confirmed by some guy on NeoGAF who I am told is more credible than IGN. "So who the fuck is this "HAL_Laboratory" guy to know better than IGN?
In development since early 2006? Really?
So this is the Donkey Kong RTS? I have to creep to get ground pound for my hero unit, and tech up to advanced power plant?
Aw dammit, insufficient bananas.
Here's hoping it's a sequel to the classic Donkey Kong Jr. Math. I've been waiting for such a game for over 20 years!
Let's keep in mind that the three top dudes at Retro left to form their own studio after Prime 3.
Also, I can't imagine anyone doing anything with Donkey Kong that measures up to exploring crazy-awesome sci-fi worlds with Samus.
