Long multiplication with Donkey Kong Jr.!

Donkey Kong Jr. Math, known in Japan as Donkey Kong Jr. no Sansū Asobi (or Donkey Kong Jr.'s Arithmetic Play) and in-game in Japan simply as Sansū Asobi, is an edutainment platforming game developed by Nintendo Randamp;amp;amp;D2 and published by Nintendo (Company) for the Family Computer in Japan on December 12, 1983, with an overseas Nintendo Entertainment System release in June 1986.

A spin-off of the platforming game Donkey Kong Jr., Donkey Kong Jr. Math re-uses the assets and gameplay mechanics from the original game to exercise math fundamentals and various levels of mental arithmetic. It is a sibling game to Popeye no Eigo Asobi (Game), a Japan-only game focusing on English word problems (in the style of the platformer Popeye (Game)). A third music-focused game, Donkey Kong no Ongaku Asobi, was cancelled prior to release.

The game later received a digital release as a Virtual Console (Concept) title for the Wii (Platform) (in 2007) and Wii U (Platform) (in 2014-2015), and was later included in the platform's Nintendo Switch Online service for the Nintendo Switch (Platform) on July 4, 2024. It was also included as an unlockable mini-game in earlier versions of the Animal Crossing (Franchise) series.


Gameplay

Much of the gameplay is based on the game Donkey Kong Jr., with the titular gorilla able to jump, climb vines, and move between vines. There are two different modes:


Calculate A / Calculate B

The multiplayer portion of the game has both players controlling their different-colored gorilla as they race to match the number Donkey Kong (Character) is holding up, using 18 randomized single-digit numbers on the vines and four operators on the island, without falling in the water. The first player to win five rounds wins the game.

The only difference between Calculate A and Calculate B is that the latter starts players with a number and Donkey Kong's number is much larger (or even negative).

The single-player portion of the game has players completing a series of 10 arithmetic problems. Players have to solve them based on manual pencil-and-paper arithmetic, with the multiple-digit multiplication and division focusing on long multiplication and long division. Players are scored based on how fast they complete each problem.

Each digit in the solution must be changed in a particular order by moving the gorilla up and down the corresponding vine. Answering incorrectly highlights all the mistaken digits, allowing the player to rework it. Players are scored based on how fast they complete the problem (at a maximum of 100 points per problem), and the game keeps track of first-try solutions (by a "reward egg"). Players can also push up the Key to skip the problem if it is too challenging, rewarding no points.

There are nine types of Exercises to choose from:

  • 3 Addition types: two-digit, four-digit, and six-digit.
  • 3 Subtraction types: three-digit, four-digit, and six-digit.
  • 2 Multiplication types: single-digit and multiple-digit.
  • 1 Division type.
