Raku Jongg, also known as Raku-jan, is a falling-block tile-matching puzzle game developed by Enterbrain and published by DigiCube (Company) for Windows PCs exclusively in Japan on April 26, 2000.
Similar to Data East's 1991 arcade game China Town (Game), Raku Jongg tasks players with forming valid melds from the real-life tile game riichi mahjong (by rotating and placing two-tile pieces on a 7×9 board) in order to compose a valid 14-tile mahjong hand (where they will be scored based on the hand's value). It is known for its riichi mechanic, where the final pair's success is determined in a mini-game similar to pachi-slot games.
It received a console conversion for the PlayStation (Platform) release on November 16, 2000 as part of D3 Publisher's Simple Series of budget games (with the full title of Simple 1500 Series Vol. 46: The Mahjong Ochi Gē - Raku Jongg), and later received a handheld conversion for the WonderSwan Color (Platform), which was published by Bandai on May 31, 2001. It later received a sequel, known as Gokuraku Jongg (Game).
The game is based on the 1997 indie PC game Raku-Jongg, which was known for being one of the winners of the third annual ASCII Entertainment Software Contest. Along with an updated theme, the biggest difference between both versions is that the original had a larger 9×9 board and only allowed melds to be composed horizontally, rather than both.
