    Overview

Qwirks is a falling-block tile-matching puzzle game developed by Big Bang Software and published by Spectrum HoloByte for Windows PCs and Macintosh computers on August 1995.

One of five games from the publisher that's endorsed (or "introduced") by Tetris creator Alexey Pajitnov (the others being BreakThru!, WildSnake, ClockWerx, and Knight Moves), Qwirks is an official computer adaptation of the 1991 Compile arcade game Puyo Puyo.

Similar to Puyo Puyo, players guide groups of two blob-shaped blocks (known here as "Qwirks") of different colors down on the playfield in an attempt to form groups of four-or-more Qwirks of the same color, clearing them and creating the potential for combos. This adaptation is known for its unique "Crystal Qwirks", which are special power-up blocks that, depending on their color, can affect the playfields in different ways.

The game's story takes place in the year 2581, where the evil Warlords of Zapf infests the Intergalactic Zoo of Earth's Alliance of Worlds with fast-multiplying creatures called "Qwirks" in order to overrun the facility and turn the other creatures evil. The scientists learn that the Qwirks can be herded into specific groups, which teleports them into another dimension.
