So I have a lot on my plan to watch list. What would you guys prioritize from that list?
Hmmm... I haven't seen many of those. Let me go through the ones I have seen in the order you should watch them:
- Grave of the Fireflies (Hotaru no Haka) - I'd prioritize this over everything else on your list. It's such a beautiful and tragic film.
- Mushishi - I recommend starting this as soon as possible and slowly watching it on-and-off over the course of a year or two. It's a very episodic series, and all of the episodes have a pretty similar structure to them, so watching them spaced-out from one another is really the best way to experience that show.
- Mobile Suit Gundam I - I recommend watching the series instead of this re-cap movie. It's an absolute classic, and although I haven't seen the re-cap movie, it seems kind of crazy to condense 43 episodes into a film... even at a runtime of 2h 20m.
- Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex - This series is great! Although I think the 1995 film is better, this series is still totally worth the watch. The sequel series, "2nd GIG", is where things really get good, though.
- Time of Eve (Eve no Jikan) - An interesting series, despite the short episodes, In fact, the whole thing is pretty short, but still has some really interesting themes throughout. Good for a quick watch.
- Psycho-Pass - This series does a lot of similar things as Stand Alone Complex, but I think the characters are a little weaker. The story also goes some different places. In any case, I wouldn't watch both series at the same time, because you might get them mixed up... and I'd definitely watch Ghost in the Shell first.
- Serial Experiments Lain - An interesting series which is... also somewhat confusing. Overall I was kind of disappointed with where the story goes, the pacing of the whole thing. It also attempts to be "deep" or "meaningful", and use (supposedly) symbolic imagery... however, it's the kind of abstract symbolism where it could mean a bunch of different things to a bunch of different people, which I dislike, because at that point it makes it seem like the symbols have no meaning at all and people are just creating a meaning out of nothing. Despite all that, I still thought it was at least worth watching, even though I probably won't watch it again.
- Now and Then, Here and There (Ima, Soku ni Iru Boku) - This series starts off pretty strong and then just draaaaags. It's a 13 episode series that could have probably been a 6 episode series. The first episode is really great, and there's some decent moments throughout... but it's pretty slow-paced.
- Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo - I've only seen one episode of this, and it was a long time ago. It seemed good, though... perhaps? I can't really comment on it much. I plan to go back to it at some point in the future.
- Blue Submarine No. 6 (Ao no 6-gou) - This is another one where I've only seen one episode. It was when I was young, watching it on Toonami. I remember being bored by it, but perhaps I was just too young to appreciate it. It's another that I plan to go back to at some point.
- Fist of the North Star (Hokuto no Ken) - I've only seen 2 episodes of this, and it was of the English Dub, with it's horrid, terrible voice acting... That alone puts it pretty low on my list, however, the animation is also not very good. It is hailed as a classic, though, so it's probably worth consuming in some fashion. I'm personally planning on reading the manga instead, and then perhaps moving on to the anime films, or the later OVAs, when the animation gets better.
- No Game No Life - I'm putting this at the bottom of the list because it's poorly done. It had some interesting ideas, but the characters, the writing, everything about the universe, and the directing just makes it totally lame. Not the worst anime I've seen, but it's exactly the type of anime series you think it is... and I'm not typically the target audience for those kind of shows. NGNL is no exception to that rule.
