Best of 2014 Tier List

I didn't have plans to make a top ten GOTY list for 2014 for two reasons. A. I was on vacation out of the country during Christmas and into early 2015. B. I almost didn't make a list for 2013 because I had a difficult time coming up with ten games to be on it. So this is my good bye to the top ten GOTY list. R.I.P

However, the idea of having some sort of list for year end archival purposes is still appealing. So I've come up with a new system that's not as strict as a top ten, yet may be more controversial in its own right. I'm talking about MikeFightNight's Best of 2014 Tier List! My goal here is to list games I have completed or played enough to be memorable for better or worse. I am not here to try and put every game I played in 2014 in a tier.

GOD TIER

Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN- (AKA Giant Bomb's Best Looking Game of 2014)

Full disclosure, this was by far my most anticipated game release of 2014. Even though it came out late in 2014 I stand behind this tier placement. I even digitally imported it from Japan two weeks before the NA release because I would be away on vacation for three weeks. It plays great, it looks fucking amazing and no other FG feels this good when you get into it. I love Xrd, but It's also not perfect (forgive me Daisuki). At it's core they have done a phenomenal job bringing the feel of old GG to a new game, but I feel it still has a lot of room to grow and be iterated upon. If any company can do this it's Arcs System Works. Iteration and striving to make a better game is what they do. I also feel like this is the true next step for Arcs FGs in a lot of ways when it comes to looks and game modes. Unfortunately it seems like the one thing they have always gotten right was lost somewhere along the way while adding all that other stuff. Netplay. I can only describe it as bad and unreliable. It seems to be getting better with patches and I hope they keep working to get it up to usual Arcs standards here in NA and not just in JP. While I only played it for two weeks in 2014 I have no doubt this will be the game I come back to again and again throughout 2015.

S TIER

Dragon Age: Inquisition (PS4)

The games I'm into can be broken into two categories. System and mechanic heavy games (FGs fill this itch for the most part) and games that focus on heavy narrative with good writing and interesting characters. Luckily for me DAI excels in the latter yet still managed to have fighting and crafting mechanics that kept me engrossed throughout the entire game. I would also like to take a moment to acknowledge just how good this game looks. It looks amazing. Even though DAI came out late in the year I put more time into it than any other game in 2014 which is kinda crazy considering I played through it in a span of two weeks. My game save is at 100 hours and I still haven't seen everything. I look forward to any future DLC and will probably go back sometime in 2015 to roll a new character.

A TIER

Dark Souls 2 (PS3)

Fuck you Ornifex.

The Last of Us: Remastered(PS4)

One of the games that made my "need to play in 2014" list. I managed to stay spoiler free and I'm glad I did. The story, characters, voice acting, graphics, music, atmosphere, tension, even the ending. I loved it all.

B TIER

The Banner Saga (ios), Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel! (PC), The Dark Eye: Chains of Satinav (PC), Diablo III: Reaper of Souls (PC), Don't Starve (PS4), Hearthstone (ios), Infamous: Second Son (PS4), Memoria (PC),Tales from Borderlands: Ep.1 (PS4), Transistor (PS4), Under Night In-birth Exe: Late (JP PSN), The Walking Dead: Season 2 (PS3), The Wolf Among Us (PC),

C TIER

Destiny (PS4)

It looks amazing and shooting things is fun. This is the only thing Destiny has going for it and in most cases that would be fine. This was suppose to be the next big thing from Bungie. Promises of unique loot, a grand immersive world and story with mechanics that would drive the FPS genre into a new era were lies. The "story" was in essence a series of deathmatch maps with respawning enemies that required little more strategy than directly shooting them in the face or stomach. No set pieces, no story, no incentive to move you forward but the core mechanics of aiming and shooting. The loot system fucking sucked. The grindy nature of the end game was a huge turn off. The idea of running through the same scenarios over and over to get enough material to craft a handful of unique gear that everyone else was doing the same thing for so they could run those same scenarios again was a maddening thought. I still had fun playing Destiny though. It looks amazing and shooting things is fun. When that's the only good thing you can say about the next big game from Bungie that's a bummer.

P4A2 (PS3)

P4A seemed like a better game, or maybe it was the fact I've played so many other better FGs since P4A that P4A2 seemed lacking in comparison.

SHIT TIER

Watch_Dogs (PS4)

Much like Destiny, WatchDogs was suppose to be the next big thing from a proven game studio. It made lots of promises that it didn't deliver on. The only difference here is WatchDogs is not fun to play.

BROKEN SHIT TIER

Driveclub (PS4)

I don't think I have been more actively mad at any game. When you spend $70 on a game who's touted main mechanic doesn't work at launch you get a little pissed. When the online portion apparently still isn't working as advertised to this day... Fuck Driveclub. The driving part was so bare bones that even if the driveclub portion worked it wouldn't save it. But it would have been nice if it at least WORKED! I sold it after a week. RIP Midnight Train.
