The original Half-Life, easily. Xen, though an awesome atmosphere, can go straight to hell.

My vote is for Fallout. It held my attention better than the rest of those and the combat is absolutely brutal.

I hate to agree with the PIRACY CANNOT BE BEATEN JUST GIVE UP trolls in this thread but it's a really hard subject to tackle. I rip all my games to ISO because I'm deployed and I'd hate to bring any real discs over here to get ruined by dust and whatnot. Also my internet is spotty as fuck and when I can't get to Steam, half my games are unplayable. I really appreciate publishers like Stardock who release their games DRM free because they know the strength of their games will make people want to own them. The only thing they control with registration is the patches. I won't be buying Mass Effect and I didn't buy Bioshock on PC because of their ridiculous DRM. I'll own both on 360 because I can just toss the disc in and play it and nothing's going to phone home and try to tell me my copy is illegit.

I also wanted to bring this up. Are sports players people or characters? If they're not people, do they really need to be in characters? Is it absolutely necessary to add every sports player that's appeared in every sports game? I know sports and gaming go hand in hand but it seems kind of ridiculous to have a page dedicated to the starting quarterback for the Big City Sports Team who appears solely in John Madden's Pro Golf 1997. For Amiga.

Edit: I forgot Diablo probably won't come out this year so Spore."
Okay now that we've got that sorted out, my serious answer is Fallout 3 looks the best to me but I haven't really been keeping up, I'm just a sucker for Bethesda and Fallout.

I think Doom 2 wins by default just for the amount of time I've put into playing it. Other contenders included Freespace 2, Fallout, Half-Life 2, System Shock 2, TES: Morrowind, MOO2, and Unreal Tournament.

Well I was going to reply with "Fallout 3, duh" but it appears the OP has been deleted. Does that make this whole thread null and void?

I've played...

UO
EQ
and Shadowbane

And none of them held my interest for longer than a month.
