Top 100 Favourite Games (2018 Edition)

It's been two years since I made my first top 100 list.

Since 2016, I've played several more games that I've really loved. Also, my feelings towards various other games have shifted. So, it feels like a good time to update things.

I should point out that I tried to avoid games that are very similar to other games in its franchise.

Cool to see someone else who really liked Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel. I'd have a hard time putting it above Borderlands 1, though maybe only considering how much more novel BL1 was at the time, I'd probably rank them about on par with each other.

Of course I'm also always happy to see people ranking Terror From the Deep in the top of the X-COM series.

Maybe I should try doing updated favorite games lists like this on a regular basis too, I've only got one which I created in like 2012 or so and which I don't think I've updated since 2015 ... and in retrospect editing an old list isn't as interesting as creating new ones every now and then to compare how your taste has changed over the years.

@fisk0: In an early draft of this list, I had Borderlands 1 placed above TPS, but it became increasingly hard to justify, given how much I played TPS. I put in 400+ hours into TPS, I played through the game four times, did most of the challenges, and got all but one of the achievements.

I still love the first Borderlands a lot, but I really got into TPS. I will say though that at least some of my enjoyment was the Australian-ness of it all.

X-Com 1 is fine, if not a little plain. But TFTD is really special to me. It has such a great, unsettling atmosphere to it all.

Also, yeah, I didn't really want to just edit my old list. I think it's cool to have the original as a sort of time-capsule.

I'm impressed with your dedication to this!

I had my own version of something like this on another site that just vanished one day (it allowed lists larger than 100 which is why I had it there), so I get how difficult this must be to create and evenmore so to maintain.

Out of curiosity, hat's your criteria for moving things up or down if there isn't new entries (i.e. why is SOMA 6 places higher now than 2016)?

@slag: There's no GameSpot-esque spreadsheet or whatever; just a bunch of personal reflection of my time with the game (and how I feel about it in comparison to the games above and below it). Specifically with SOMA, in the three years since that game was released, I've thought about it a lot - particularly its ending. It's become something I've grown to appreciate more and more.

Other games have been affected by spending more time with them (including watching playthroughs) and then reevaluating how I feel. For example, THPS 2 took a dive, in large part because of the Giant Bomb playthrough.

One day I might add commentary to the games on the list (but I probably actually won't...)

@beachthunder:I got ya. Sounds about fair as any method I've heard

hah I feel ya on commentary. It takes a long time to add that in for a list like this and Gb doesn't make it exactly easy to save your progress
