Game of the Year 2015

  • The writing and depth of an RPG is supposed to suffer as it takes on elements of other genres and becomes more action oriented and certainly open world. Yet this game proved me wrong with that thinking. CD Projekt just put their heads down and did tons of great work and writing and delivered one of the best RPGs of all time. Really, I would say THE best but I like to let a little time and distance pass before I make that kind of claim. The game is beautiful, the music is fantastic, the combat the meditation system are both so well designed and tactical. Being a Witcher was like being a detective many times and that worked very well. An all time classic.

  • "You feel it, too, don't you?"

This game is only second because Witcher 3 is so damn good. Loved the gameplay, really enjoyed the story (though could have used a bit of MGS humor and the boss fights that are such a huge part of the series), and found all of it's systems so intelligently linked to cause near constant surprise and rewarding moments.

The single most underrated aspect of this game is the enemy AI and how you can play with it and how it responds to you. That, combined with the controls and options at your disposal make this the best playing stealth game hands down.

  • I have usually left sports games off these lists, even 2K which has been a series I've really loved for years now. But when my game time on Steam for 2k15 hit the 300 hour mark, I realized how deserving this game is to be thought of in an overall context. In my own way, I think of 2K as the ultimate strategy/tactical action RPG on the market.

The game is tougher in general this year. Defense is greatly improved (almost is a little too good on ball compared to what you see in the league). Height and length of players matters in a big way. The post game is also improved with fadaway jumpers in particular actually being useful now.

The game is better but in feel almost less fun than last year in a way because it is a little less mindless to not turn the ball over. The AI is more of a challenge and they go on runs in a way I think that is more accurately capturing the "game of runs" aspect of basketball than they have managed before now. I am pretty soft on challenge in my sports games so keep that in mind.

And basically yeah really it's that it's harder to play drunk which I shouldn't blame it for. Seems like a positive.

    160 hours and counting.

  • This is a good game, no doubt, but in the end the weakest Bethesda game in a while. The world ends up feeling lifeless in many areas how F3 did not and stuff like the building and crafting, while initially huge draws, are very shallow. All this makes this feel game feel underdeveloped.

If the game had expanded the settlements to be more simulationy and had more nuance to the crafting and the results of the crafting, it would have went a long way for example.

Still on my list here! I got enjoyment from this game for sure but it was disappointing after a bit.

I think modding could do a lot of great things for this game over the long run.

  • This game has some big issues but there is something so charming about its theme and how not seriously it takes itself. I'm not even into Sentai shows but running/playing one of your own really works. I hope they make a sequel because it feels like only a half step to what could be a lot more management/creative depth. Simple, but fun in its SRPG mechanics.

  • This didn't live up to 9 for me but it was still a fun game. They did a pretty good job with the new characters (Fera Tor was actually my favorite character in the game) if not all fantastic (I thought the Kidz were boring). The story just wasn't nearly as fun as 9. Also the PC launch was a mess for me.

If this sounds negative for a GOTY list game, keep in mind I have high expectations for MK. This is a good game.

  • I can really enjoy some co-op action if it is well fleshed out and this fits the bill. I am a Warhammer fan and think they do the grimy dark Warhammer very well. Skaven are fun to fight, especially when sweep attacks from my two handed hammer send them flying into walls or off cliffs with the very satisfying melee and ranged combat this game has. The special enemies and ways it forces you to stick together by having you helplessly be downed at times feels cheap and frustrating to me but otherwise I like the design here. Playing with bad teammates can be more frustrating than ever since most of your RPG rewards hinge on making it out. Nice art and sound.

  • Got into this late but boy is this fun and impressive at times. Drunkenly stumbling off a ledge can be frusterating but swinging yourself to safety in a way you couldn't predict or laughing at just how the character walks around are some really fun moments. I love the format of the game too.

  • I used to be really big into online shooters but the genre has drawn me much in a while. I do think Battlefront is lacking in maps but personally I really enjoy it's fast paced gameplay (feels very old school to me) and less drawn out and complex progression. And it is so beautiful to look at.
