Believe it or not, December 2025 was the first time in 6 years I was able to visit family over the holiday season. Of course, a lot had changed in and around my parents' house, but my childhood room remained untouched, complete with oodles of participation trophies and '90s Winnipeg Jets memorabilia. All of the old sights and sounds made me feel a bit nostalgic, so when it came to gaming, I decided to take a break from current-day technology and vibe out hard to some quality point and clickers. (Specifically, Curse of Monkey Island and Harvester).
In a way, the whole experience reminded me of how strong this year was for retro-style games, and I felt compelled to write a top 10 list again this year. So I did! The problem was that something felt wrong or missing... Or rather, someone...? Nah, it couldn't be. Did I actually miss Creed...? I mean, things ended well enough years back, and heck - I've recently turned over a new leaf! I'm a good guy now, just like Creed! Surely we'll be able to strike some common ground! Right...?! This list just wouldn't be the same without him. I'll reach out!

10. Sonic Racing Crossworlds
I didn't get a Switch 2 until late in the year, and thus, my go-to kart racer this year was Sonic Racing Crossworlds. Up until this game, the only other kart racer I'd ever owned was Chocobo Racing for PS1. I, much like many others, probably instantly think of Mario Kart and Mario Kart for anything kart-related. Thankfully, I diversified my portfolio and gave this one a shot. The speed and the handling are wonderful. You never feel sluggish or like you can't keep your car from staying on track. Drifting, gliding, and weaponry are all similar enough to Mario Kart as well, so there'll probably not be much of a learning curve for most. The levels and music tracks are all great, too. I can't think of a single boring track or one that I really dreaded to race. DLC of both characters and levels is still being released, so there looks to be support for this one. A great racer.

Your only other kart racing knowledge was Mario Kart? No Diddy Kong Racing? No Crash Team Racing?? You've been missing out on so much. I guess that's to be expected when you spend most of your time not branching out. We really gotta diversify your portfolio.
10. Split Fiction
Another banger from the crew that brought us It Takes Two. Fun game that will also make you wanna fist fight the person you're playing with. But to be fair, I was playing alongside Tyler Breeze, and we would end up fist-fighting over almost anything. So maybe that's just us. Kind of a love-hate relationship.

9. Capcom Fighting Collection 2
I love fighting games... I love Capcom fighting games.....I love...Power Stone! This collection has a power stone on it, so it automatically gets my love. There are some great games in this collection, but as a true child of SEGA, I will always enjoy rocking people in Power Stone. Something you wouldn't understand since you only play Street Fighter. I love Street Fighter and always will, and congrats on getting your stuff in the game. I wasn't jealous at all. Like not even a little bit. Great game, my expertise is just more far-reaching than yours. And that's ok to be the second-best pro wrestling video game enthusiast. You have nothing to be ashamed of.

9. Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound
The NES Ninja Gaiden games were always revered for their difficulty. You were somebody if you were legitimately able to beat any one of those games. But me? Nah, I never wanted to do it for the fame, fortune, or notoriety that would soon follow. I beat the Ninja Gaiden games for the story. I did it because the speed of the game, coupled with the music, flipped that switch in me. Those games lock me in, and I can't accept defeat after that. This Ninja Gaiden was able to capture those same feelings, and I still cared about the heroes of the story and wanted to see how they'd fare in the end. This one doesn't leave you disappointed in any regard and also offers multiple endings as well. A great game for completionists, speed runners, and/or people just looking to play a great retro-themed game, whether they're familiar with the originals or not.
8. Split Fiction
I'm a sucker for co-op story-based games. I grew up with it. I crave it. Split Fiction brought this and then some, blending Fantasy and cyberpunk-themed levels for this journey. It doesn't get much better to me than that, so I'm happy from the get-go. For those who played It Takes Two, the same idea with how the cooperative progression works, except this time, there are even more innovations. Sometimes the timing can be uhh, difficult, but what a feeling it is when both you and your partner are in the flow state and feel like you're setting the world speed running record. The final act of the story, in particular, truly amazed me. These folks really are the kings and queens of co-op.

Hell of a game. Had we played it together, I know I'd have been carrying you through all the puzzles and boss fights.

8. Mario Kart World
Another installment of Mario Kart. This one has the open world aspects, outfits, the new jumping and grinding system; they really added a lot of things to make the game feel really different from the last one. I will say that one of my favorite memories was playing this with my oldest. Him being in first place the entire last lap. Getting within sight of the finish line. Smacking him with a blue shell. Passing him to win, him screaming at the top of his lungs. Then watching him get hit with a red shell, a star, then another red shell, and finishing 10th. I remember this happening to me as a child, and I'm just glad that I can give him the true feeling of defeat due to Mario Kart shenanigans. This is the way. I still want an updated version of double dash tho.
7. Super Mario Party Jamboree
A lot of my gaming this past year was with my tiny humans. As I do my best to train them in the ways of the controller arts, I wanna make sure that even the 3-year-old can jump in. This game is amazing in that aspect. We have pulled a ton of hours out of this game cause it has everything they are into right now. It's got all of the things we love about Mario Party and just a ton of really fun mini games. Selfishly watching my children's faces as I win due to bonus stars will always make my heart grow three sizes like the Grinch. I love it. The anguish. The pain. This is truly why we are alive, y'all.

7. Absolum
This one was the biggest surprise this year for me. Now and then, when I have friends over - no, not Creed, never CREED - I'll bust out or buy a beat 'em up to play while we chat and reminisce, etc. Here I see this new game, Absolum, and think, "Why not?" We were all blown away.
Now us Beat 'em Up fans have been blessed with a nifty little comeback as of late, and though so many titles have been class and repped the genre well, Absolum wins best in show, imo. Picture Golden Axe meets Guardian Heroes meets Streets of Rage 4 and wrapped in a nice little roguelite package. Combat is tight, rewarding, and fun. Character progression always has you looking forward to the next run(s) since gaining new skills always feels attainable. Plenty of routes and sidequests keep runs unique 50 runs later. You just don't get that type of variance in beat 'em ups. Ever. Incredible game, one of the best beat 'em ups of all time, free.
Oh, and the Underking theme is probably the best boss theme of the year.
6. Terminator 2D: NO FATE
It's no secret that T2 is my favorite movie of all time. I mean, heck, one of my career favorite entrances was an homage I produced for my first Tokyo Dome main event. Sadly, on the gaming end of things, aside from the arcade and maybe the pinball machine, the fans really got the short end of the stick. Until now, that is. This game, with its beautiful sprite work and tunes straight from the movie, brings you back to 1991 and makes you wish the folks at Bitmap Bureau would go on an action movie campaign to create all of the best games we've ever had for the best movies of the 80's and 90's.
Gameplay-wise, Terminator 2D: No Fate is always changing it up. Every level offers something new dependent on the character you're controlling and where you are in the movie. You're never doing one thing long enough for it to ever feel tedious. At times, the run-and-gun sections take obvious influences from Contra, but I definitely got some Terminator for Sega CD vibes too. The motorcycle chase felt like Battletoads Turbo Tunnel (except fun and beatable), and planting the bombs at Cyberdyne was pretty close to what I remember from the SNES version of the game, but much more enjoyable.
And that's really what makes this game so incredible for me. It plays like a retro title while still playing like the movie. There's no padding for the sake of it and no ridiculous difficulty spikes to slow players down from progressing. You feel powerful as the heroes of the story, and (spoiler alert), you even get the opportunity to flip the script! Because after all, there is no fate but what we make for ourselves...

6. Doom: The Dark Ages
Alright. Definitely didn't play this with my kids. As they aren't yet ready for the bullet hell that is Doom. Really enjoyed playing this for normal Doom reasons. Having to learn the area you're in, staying in constant motion so you don't get shot in the face, the creative baddies all throughout really hooked me in. But most importantly, bouncing the shield off surfaces to cut up the demons. One of the most satisfying mechanics in the game. The game is pure violence, and I recommend it if you wanna blow off some steam while also stressing yourself out.
5. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Splintered Fate
Pretty straightforward. I found out I've got a love for roguelikes, so this piqued my interest. A multi-player TMNT roguelike has so many things that I like that it was hard for me not to play it. Really fun if you're looking to share the bullet hell with a friend.

Yeah, I'll actually second you on this one, Creed. Playing this with a friend who never really games, and then 100 hours later, we're still begging to know, "Who's the ultimate evil in all of this?!" That type of feeling you can share in a game in couch co-op in 2025 is hard to come by. Had I done a list in 2024, this game was absolutely way up there. I'm guessing Creed played the Switch 2 version, so his list is valid on a technicality. Barely...
5. Silent Hill f
I've heard some of the most passionate of SH fans claim that this isn't a true Silent Hill. Lemme guess: Is it because SH:f doesn't take place in the physical town of Silent Hill? Is that it?!... Yeah? Oh. Well...Umm, that kinda makes sense, I feel you on that one. Well, strip the SH and just call it 'f' if you really like, but this game is still an incredible entry into the series and a masterclass in psychological horror as well. I didn't take to the combat immediately in the beginning, but I actually grew to enjoy it after the first few enemy encounters. Enough about the combat, though, where this game gets you is in its atmosphere-building and storytelling. The near photo-realistic graphics, life-like environments, and believable voice acting help a ton here, too. I've very rarely had it in me to play a horror game 3 times over to uncover a "true" end, but SH:f had me wanting all the answers, and I didn't end my time with this game disappointed. Apparently, we'll be getting more and more SH since the success of this title, and here's hoping the writing and direction are as strong moving forward.
4. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
Okay, I know what's gonna happen here, so I'm getting ahead of the attacks on my character. I just ain't gonna have it from the mob today, not this time - BECAUSE - this game is incredible. The story, the combat, and especially the music are all top-tier. The tippity top of tiers. This isn't about all of the wonderful things E33 did right to create an unforgettable experience. This is simply my top 10 based on my own personal enjoyment. I just happened to very slightly enjoy a few games a bit more this year, that's all. It ain't too deep.
Anyhow... For those looking to try a streamlined JRPG experience whilst feeling the love and passion the devs had for the project, E33 is a great game to go with 10/10 times. I'd go so far as to call E33 a FRPG (French RPG) because the art direction, the dialogue, and again, the music almost make this a cultural experience. The feeling as it plays, as the story progresses, is so different than much of what we've had in the JRPG space that the team at Sandfall Interactive almost, maybe probably, deserve the honor of naming their own RPG subgenre.
Lastly, for anyone who still thinks I'm a fraud. I platinum'd the game and can easily full parry everything but Simon. I'm cracked but not that cracked.
For the true believers, what are your favorite tracks for E33? I gotta give it to Monoko's Theme and Rain from the Ground (Goblu's Theme). For a track you only hear 3 times or so, Monoco's theme was just so damn groovy. Jim Carrey as the Mask type ish groovy. As for Rain from the Ground, once you hear the intro and the synth kicks in, you just know you've stumbled onto something you've gotta lock in for.

4. Dynasty Warriors: Origins
So there are games that I play at home and games that I play while I'm traveling. I have an ROG Ally X, so when I'm on the plane, I'm running through those who would stand against me in the 3 kingdoms. Dynasty Warriors has always been one of my top franchises, and this game was really fun to run through. Exploring the open world map and getting to make your decisions on what family to support made it feel like you had a good bit of control over where the story was going. The weapon upgrade system made every fight satisfying, knowing that whatever weapon you use is going to always lead to you leveling up in a way. I only played this game while I was in the clouds, so I was as locked in as I could possibly be while playing. And when they drop the next one I’ll be on that one too!
3. Monster Hunter Wilds
I waited patiently for this game to drop. When it did, I took 3 days off from real life. My buddy brought his pc to my place and set it up next to mine. And we played. For 3 days, we hunted monsters. For 3 days, we cut pieces from beasts to build armor and weapons. I went and bought a new monitor to fully experience the world. I was fully in! The only downfall is that I wanted to play it all the time, and my handheld couldn't run it very well, and I don't have as much time to play at home as I train my minions. They aren't yet ready for the glorious pain that is Monster Hunter. But please believe that I will be running through even more monsters when the time is right.

3. Hades 2
The original Hades is among the holy trinity of roguelites for me. It's hard to distinguish a clear-cut #1, but Hades, Dead Cells, and Enter the Gungeon have a special place in my heart. For the co-op aspect, I'd say TMNT Splintered Fate also.
That being said, before starting Hades 2, I was a bit worried it would all feel a little too same-samey and that I'd get burnt out. So how did it fare? Well, it did feel familiar, but in all of the ways that made me love the original so much. The control, art direction, difficulty, and voice acting are all still top-notch. Not to mention the writing in general. Character relationships that are fun and rewarding to progress while you tackle your main mission (which is equally as interesting). Though it can get difficult at times, because of the strength of its writing, I can easily suggest Hades as a great entry point for anyone who'd like to give the genre a shot or is looking for what I'd say is S-tier representation for Roguelites.
2. Hollow Knight: Silksong
I struggled while choosing my number 2 because I truly enjoyed all of my top 5 a ton. So why then is Silksong #2? For one, I'm a sucker for a great Metroidvania, and let's face it, no one does it quite like Team Cherry. How they crammed in so much content for the most generous of prices is something that still bewilders me. I will say one thing, though: This game ain't for everyone, especially if you're looking to snag the true ending. The amount of time I spent grinding, experimenting with loadouts, and failing on certain bosses... If Switch 2 Pro controllers weren't so expensive, a few hundred may have been smashed to bits due to the rage induced by my own blunders. But I never gave up because I knew that the pop off was gonna be worth it. No game on my list had that in abundance as Silksong did. A gorgeous game visually, and it controls like a dream. Certain fights require a bit of RNG, but most times, if you die, it's your fault as a player, and you can absolutely git gud enough to clear whatever hurdle you're stuck on eventually. Whatever may be next for Team Cherry, I, and the padded room I'll need, can't wait.

2. Superball
Surprise! I stream weekly with Tyler Breeze every Wednesday night on my YouTube channel UpUpDownDown. The show is called "Tuesday Night Heat" (I know, it's on Wednesday, but called... it's a long story). Our audience tossed this game at us, and I ended up falling in love with it. Someone said, "It's like Rocket League but with people." My reply was, "Oh, you mean soccer". It's 3v3 soccer, and everyone has abilities. There's a ton of characters to choose from, and each group of characters is built for a specific position on the field. Once we got the hang of it, I realized how much I really enjoyed it. Playing goalie ended up being my jam once I figured a few things out. There's a ton of customization reminiscent of a team shooter like Overwatch. Each character can be customized, looks-wise, and you can shuffle around a few of the attacks that are available during a match as well. It's just a really fun game that you can play in short spurts or sit down and dump a ton of time into. Highly recommend.
1. Hades 2
Finally. At number 1. This is going to go down as one of my favorite games of all time. I'm still playing it and loving it. I have been playing it since before the official launch. During development, they had a Discord you could jump into to give feedback on every update that dropped. And I was there for every single one. It was really cool seeing people come together to help build the game that we all wanted to play. Players from all over coming together for a common goal is such an awesome feeling. Anyway, so Hades 1 is a roguelike where you gain coins from the gods as you descend into the underworld. But in this game, you now have the addition of fighting topside to try and save Mt Olympus. Fighting the battle on two fronts opens the game up to interactions with so many more characters from Greek mythology. Then the music...the music is incredible. The song "Moonlight Guide Us" has been on repeat in my headphones while I'm currently traveling all across the UK on tour with WWE. I listen to it before my matches. After my matches. And I'm working on them, pumping it through the speakers during my matches. The replay value is through the roof, and I'll probably continue playing this game through 2026, considering how satisfying it is. I can't get enough of it, and I hope that whoever is reading this gives the game a chance. Moonlight guides us...

1. Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii
Everyone by now knows that I have a few series that I live and breathe by. The Yakuza/RGG series is one of them. The characters, the storytelling, and the whimsical nature of the sidequests and mini-games. I love it all. Am I biased? You darn tootin' I am. BUT, this is my list, so if you don't like it, lump it, suck on some lemons, and fly a kite, brah.
Without getting too much into the nitty-gritty, our story takes place in Hawaii once again, but features fan favorite Goro Majima as the main character. He's lost his memory and washes ashore on an unknown island where he meets an adventurous young boy, Noah, and his pet baby Tiger, Goro. As ridiculous as it may sound, you're soon thereafter a full-fledged pirate - sailing on an enormous (customizable) ship and off on an incredibly fun, swashbuckling journey with no shortage of things to do. Much like every other RGG game that came before it, it has its share of ridiculousness but knows where and when to reel it in when it's time to play it seriously. I don't ever force myself to platinum games for the sake of the achievement, I only do it when I'm having a genuinely good time. This, to me, was the best of times and never the worst of times.

You know what? I don't hate this Christmas in July thing. It kind of works out pretty well.

I mean, for this year's situation I’ll agree it wasn't that bad. We actually got along for the most part.
CREED
Yeah, I noticed that too. Regardless of what all your friends say about you behind your back, maybe you're not such a bad guy after all.
KENNY
I appreciate that.... WAIT A MINUTE! What do they say behind my back?
CREED
They asked me not to say anything, so I'll have to respect their wishes. I'm an honorable guy.
KENNY
I get it, man. I'm the same way, and that's why I haven't said anything about your hairline. I'm honorable too.
CREED
Kenny, I hope every time you put on fresh socks, you step in a small puddle.
KENNY
Oh yeah? You don't even wanna know what I did in your socks, so how about that?!

TMI! That's just lewd, crude, and rude!
Suddenly, someone in Creed's house picked up the phone, and it kicked him off the internet. Kenny, having no one to argue with anymore, decided to log off and power down his computer. The storm outside began to kick off again, but this time it looked pretty normal, unlike the previous one. So he decided it was time to head to his temporary slumber. He brushed his teeth, turned off his lights, and jumped into his bed. At this point, the storm had gotten pretty serious with thunder, lightning, and violent winds whipping through the trees. As Kenny finally lay his head down to rest, he had the strange suspicion that someone was watching him. He heard a loud crash from the thunder and popped up out of bed. What he saw was a knife stabbed into the wall, and it was holding a piece of paper with writing on it. The letters on the paper were red in color and dripping down the page with the consistency of what seemed to be blood.

Kenny crumples up the paper and throws it towards the trash can. He misses (obviously) and climbs into bed. As he closes his eyes, he thinks to himself, "I guess Christmas in July ain't that bad."
