    Persona

    Concept »

Manifestations of a person's 'mask' that he or she shows the world. They can also be described as a representation of the control over a character's shadow personality. These entities appear as famous and legendary characters in the world of mythology. Tremendous power hidden within each one.

    Short summary describing this concept.

Persona last edited by Sirkinsella98 on 09/24/21 01:21AM View full history

    Revelations: Persona

In Revelations: Persona the characters are given the ability to summon their Personae after a fateful encounter with Philemon. After each character is bestowed the power to summon their Personae they can call them at anytime.

    Persona 2

In Persona 2: Innocent Sin and Persona 2: Eternal Punishment the way in which the characters get their Personae is the same as in Revelations: Persona; the characters meet Philemon and are bestowed with the power of Persona.

    Persona 3 and FES

     Persona!
     Persona!
In Persona 3 and FES, to summon a Persona, one must use an Evoker, though there are some cases where an Evoker is not required for summoning. A Persona can actually be artificially created, but because the Persona does not come naturally to its artificial user, it becomes violent and difficult to control; if the Persona-user isn't strong enough to hold back their Persona, it may even wind up killing the host. Artificial Personae can be suppressed by certain drugs, aptly named Suppressants, but use of the drugs causes fatal side-effects. It's possible for one to have the power of the Wild Card, meaning that multiple Personae can be contained simultaneously. The only two seen capable of this power are the main character and Aigis.

Philemon does not appear in Persona 3, but there are several references to him, most notably a fluttering blue butterfly that can be seen several times throughout the game.

    Persona 4

     Yosuke summoning his Persona.
     Yosuke summoning his Persona.
In Persona 4, Persona are confirmed to be a Shadow, albeit tamed ones. When one enters the Midnight Channel, one's innermost secrets personify and become a Shadow-self (a look-alike that is the incarnation of the negative personality facets and repressed emotions that the person tries to deny) which attempts to get its host to accept it. If one cannot accept the Shadow-self, or rather, if they refuse to acknowledge what they want to keep hidden most, the Shadow becomes angry and transforms into a monster. If one can face oneself and admit to what the Shadow-self says, then the Shadow transforms into a Persona loyal to its user.

The Evokers from Persona 3 have been replaced by a floating Tarot card, which the Persona-user shatters to summon the Persona.

Again just like Persona 3 and FES, Philemon doesn't appear in Persona 4, though there are a few references to him in the game; many of the save points throughout the game are a blue butterfly flying in a circle. This indicates that Philemon is still watching over the player.

    Loss of Control

While Philemon describes the Persona as reflections of a character's inner self, there have been many instances that persona have rebelled against their host.

In Persona 3, Strega members must take medication to prevent losing control of their persona and being killed by it. Strega, however, is a group of artificial Persona users.

Additionally, during Revelations: Persona, Kandori Takahisa loses control of his persona and it possesses him, turning him into a demon. However, this was because his Persona was actually Nyarlathotep in disguise.

    List of Persona

Here is a full list of personae, with their respective Arcana. More personae were added in Persona 3 FES in each arcana, as well as some minimal changes. So far, Persona 2: Eternal Punishment and 4 are the only games containing Persona in the World Arcana.
