Penny Arcade is an iconic gaming web-comic by Jerry Holkins and Mike Krahulik known for its vulgarity and satire of gaming industry and culture. Its first strips appeared in 1998.
In 2008, their adventure-RPG Penny Arcade Adventures: On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness - Episode One debuted on several platforms. It was the first episode in a series planned to consist of four, and to date three episodes have been released. The first two episodes were developed by Hothead Games, with contributions from Holkins and Krahulik, and featured a customized player character fighting evil gods and solving eldritch mysteries alongside Krahulik's and Holkins' alter egos Gabe and Tycho. The third game in the series was put on indefinite hold due to Hothead Games' occupation with DeathSpank, unexpectedly low sales of Episode Two, and Holkins' and Krahulik's fatigue with video game development. Holkins released a written version of the continued story in chapters between August 9 2010 and January 14 2011 with the expectation that the series would not continue.
Robert Khoo, Penny Arcade's Business Manager, proposed an "8-bit-style" Episode Three and contacted Zeboyd Games, whose two members were already fans of Penny Arcade. Both the released Episode Three and expected Episode Four were written as direct continuations of the story by Holkins, who was dissatisfied with leaving his story unfinished. Episode 3 uses different RPG mechanics than the previous two, has no customized player character, and features a rotating party. Episode Four is expected to be released under Zeboyd Games with similar characteristics to Episode Three.
