Obsidian has revealed "Project X" and has shown this image on their website. The words say: "What do the words mean?" "Nothing. The Dirge of Elr Glanfath is sound without form, a lone voice crying out in mourning because it must." This game is probably The Wheel of Time which has been dormant since it was announced back in 2010. What do you guys think this tease is for Obsidian's next game?

"Elr Glanfath" doesn't sound very Wheel of Time-esque, so I'm doubting that. A shame. I'd totally Ashaman it up. Or maybe Red Hand it up.

The magic of Google is hinting at Dungeon Siege, so I'd bank money on that. Hard to imagine a new IP having to do with the number 4. Unless it's about some sort of celtic version of Brett Favre.

Doubt it's that. The Obsidian announcement was in 2010, and the licenceholders have been fairly quiet since then until launching (and apparently canceling) a Kickstarter a few weeks ago where development was being done by Jet Set Games rather than Obsidian.

The symbol of the snake eating its own tail is a prominent feature in the Wheel of Time. While I wouldn't go all in on that bet, I would definitely favour the WoT theory.

Edit: But then again, the number 4 kinda ruins that theory and makes it seem more like a new Dungeon Siege. I am really hoping for Wheel of Time.

That's Ouroboros, a pretty common mythological symbol. And as I said, WoT licenceholder Red Eagle Games is now promoting their partnership with Jet Set Games with no mention of Obsidian and nothing but a few concept art pieces to show off. Also, Obsidian is a two team studio, so they would have had to put WoT on hold at one point to do South Park, Dungeon Siege 3 and project North Carolina.

I hear that it is now related to Josh Sawyer's Kickstarter project, with his twitter mentioning him filming something, maybe a pitch video? The name of this possibly single player PC RPG could be 'Eternity' either in name or license. Can't wait for Friday, what with the BLL show and this announcement.

I thought it was Dungeon Siege 4, but it appears to be a countdown, as it was displaying "3" today. Now I'm not sure. Curious if this is anything related to one of their forum topics fishing ideas for a Kickstarter....

Hmm....maybe this is all an elaborate plan to announce South Park: Stick of Truth early?

The Serpent Ring is a thing in Wheel of Time fiction, but nothing about that text reminds me of the books, so I don't know.

But.. FUCKING WHEEL OF TIME, MAN. GIVE ME MY AES SEDAI/ASHA'MAN RPG.

EDIT: Throw out your Fallout 4/Dungeon Siege 4 theories, the number is now a 3.

But I'd laugh my ass off if, with that cryptic string of fantasy-sounding words, it did turn out to be Fallout 4. Also, I wouldn't mind Obsidian taking over Fallout.

God damn it. I want Obsidian to continue to do original stuff. Another Dungeon Siege game isn't interesting unless it does something drastically different and sets itself apart from the past iterations.

Fallout 4 It sounds like a fantasy setting and Obsidian made Dungeon Siege 3, but I don't think 3 made that much money to get a sequel. Whatever, its Dungeon Siege 4.

Nobody's been able to connect the various names and expressions from the countdown page to anything established, so most likely this is something new Obsidian is developing on their own. J.E. Sawyer also tweeted about filming something, which has started speculation that they're doing a pitch video for a Kickstarter.

Dungeon Siege 3 cost pennies to make. It wasn't a massive success, but it made a good profit. It wouldn't surprise me to see them do a sequel and if they acknowledge the problems, they could make the fourth game much better. Plus they already have the engine and assets this time.

The fact the countdown started on 4, which is an odd number to begin a countdown on, makes me think it'll still be Dungeon Siege. I'd probably prefer if they were just doing a new game through Kickstarter though. Obsidian are great developers who constantly get screwed over by publishers.

I dunno man. Though they have had a history of being screwed over by publishers they also have a history of being equally screwed by releasing very buggy product. I would think that a lot of people unfamiliar with their history sees them as "those guys who release awesomely written, but almost broken games".

@ProfessorEss: Their games are always buggy BECAUSE of the publishers. Almost every one of their games has been rushed to release, in some cases leaving them no time to even finish the game (KotOR 2). You can't really blame them for releasing an unfinished game, when the release windows were completely outside of their control. It's really a shame so many place the blame on Obsidian.

Unrelated, but I would actually be really interested to see an Obsidian built Elder Scrolls game. I know it's Bethesda's baby, unlike fallout, so that would probably never happen, but a TES game with Obsidian quality writing would really float my boat. It would be buggy as shit, but hey, that's why PC games have mod communities.

It's a WoT game, the symbol above is an Aes Sedai symbol that sybolizes the continuity of time. Here:

@zels: It's not, because, as said, first of all, a snake eating it's own tail is not unique to the Wheel of Time. It's an Ouroboros. A common mythological theme. Second, the holder of the Wheel of Time IP, Red Eagle, recently announced that they are now working with Jet Set Games, developing Mobile Games.

Also, as someone who has read the books multiple times, there's nothing in anything written so far that I feel could even be remotely related. (This is not to say it isn't, just that it doesn't have that feel).

It's a shame, as I would've liked to have seen Obsidian make a Wheel of Time game, and additionally unfortunate because Red Eagle are now working on Mobile Games? (Euuuuugh).

If anything, the names/locations in the texts have a bit of a celtic feel to me, which makes me think a bit of Dungeon Siege. Could be new IP, or something else.

The symbol does look kind of like the Aes Sedai symbol, but in the novels the snake is actually in a figure-8 shape rather than a ring.

For that bit of pessimism, though, I would freaking love to see a WoT game done well. I've been reading those books for about 8 years now. Of course, this is Obsidian we're talking about, so they'll probably get the WoT part of it right and the game part of it will be kind of janky.

@Codeacious: Nah, the ring is a simple loop. The ring is described as being "shaped as" a Great Serpent - not sure how you'd do that with an infinity symbol (brass knuckles?)

The Ouroboros on the logo of Wheel of Time (an infinity-symbol-shaped Ouroboros weaved through a wooden wheel) is shaped like the infinity symbol, though.

edit: and here's the officially licensed "Aes Sedai Great Serpent ring": http://www.fantasy-jewelry.com/products/Aes-Sedai-Great-Serpent-Ring.html

@zels: I wish I could, but there's pretty overwhelming evidence of it not being this!

Like this quote from the source of the countdown page:

    <!--. X . X X . T X -->
<!-- Two centuries ago, your divine champion told the people of Dyrwood to grovel at his feet. If you've come on pilgrimage to the blasted crater that was our reply, Godhammer Citadel is *that* way. -->

Just boiling it down to "Godhammer" invalidates any Wheel of Time theory (the word "God" has been carefully avoided through all books. Synonyms are used ("Creator"), but "God" is not a concept that has ever been used)

If anything, I'd say that the key to figuring this out what it is rather than what it is not is in the cipher on the first line of that quote.

I never played Planescape: Torment. Anyone here who did that could hazard a guess at whether this could relate to the supposed kickstarter for that?

I wish it could be a Wheel of Time RPG where you are a Aes Sedai/Asha Man and wreck fools by channeling the one power. But sadly it probably isn't. Dungeon Siege 4? Ehhhhh.... bleh.

Either way, Obsidian is a developer I want to stay in business, so we'll see.

@Nomin: On Obsidian's forums, they suggested it could be "ETERNITY", getting an I before the T today seems to support that idea.
