An AI companion is a computer-controlled ally who follows and aids you through your adventures or who requires your protection. The AI companion's survival is often essential to game and story progression.
A scripted random event that may or may not have been intended by the developers. A source of much unintentional comedy & frustration. An example would be the Imperial foresters fighting each other over deer. Another would be a tribe chieftain getting kidnapped by UFO's in Spore.
Argonians are a reptilian race from the Elder Scrolls series who come from the province of Black Marsh.
Artificial Intelligence, or AI, commonly refers to the programmed behaviors of NPCs in a game, whether it's the fact that a soldier takes cover behind a wall in Gears of War, or that townspeople cheer upon your arrival to their village in Fable.
One of the original founders of the Citadel Council, the Asari are natural biotics who are among the smartest and most diplomatic species in the galaxy.
The spiritual successor to the Infinity Engine. This 3D engine made its appearance in the Neverwinter Nights series, and provided a toolset along with multiplayer where players could be Dungeon Masters and make their own stories and play them out with friends.
Short for Born On Board, these civilians appear in the Marathon series, both as allies and enemies.
Short one-line audio clips spoken by the NPCs that populate the game world. Can be random or in reaction to the player or events.
An alien race featured in the Mass Effect franchise. The Batarians are a disgraced race mostly isolated in a lawless area of the Galaxy known as the Terminus Systems. Conflicts with the human race have put them at odds with the Citadel Council.
The bighorn sheep is one of two species of wild sheep in North America with large horns, the other being the Dall sheep (Ovis dalli).
A blacksmith is someone who forges iron and steel to create new items. They are common vendors of weapons and other metallic objects in fantasy RPGs.
The many lovely ladies who have been allies and love interests to James Bond.
A path that is displayed on screen to help guide the player to certain objectives.
Games in which the player is incapable - not just discouraged from - harming innocents. Sorry, no matter how bad you want to, you just can't pull that trigger.
Games that feature cheerleaders. Whether they be girls with pom-poms or burly Japanese men, they know how to get people motivated.
The CL4P-TP General Purpose Robots, better known as Claptraps, are robots who assist the population of Pandora in Borderlands. The first Claptrap in the game (the one on the title screen) is almost always dancing for some reason.
Conning is a feature in most MMOs which allows a player to estimate the level and/or potential challenge of a particular mob primarily by the color of the text that appears when considering the fight. Conning can also determine faction standing with a particular NPC from a safe distance.
Elites, also known as Sangheili are a Covenant race in the Halo series. During Halo: Combat Evolved and the bulk of Halo 2 they are the primary antagonists. They became semi allied with the humans in Halo 3, and are in a political crisis during Halo 4, some still at war with Humanity.
Bethesda's new graphics engine for their upcoming game, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.
Sometimes you want a challenge, sometimes you wanna coast.
Digimon are the digital monsters that populate the Digital World. They can be captured, trained, and digivolved into stronger forms.
One of the council races in the Mass Effect universe. Incredibly strong, but very slow, the Elcor have a very conservative culture, and use unique social conventions to communicate.
Missions during which players are tasked with protecting a non-playable character or object from harm until a certain goal is met.
NPCs in many games who serve no purpose but to die, sometimes in vast numbers or sometimes alone in a dramatic fashion. They often lack names and aren't valuable to the story in any way.
The Fallen, also known as the Eliksni, are an insectoid alien race in the Destiny universe. They fled their homeworld after the Traveler abandoned them, and have taken up a war against humanity after rediscovering the Traveler in the Solar System.
A bastardized version of Snow-elves.
A hand gesture with a long and controversial history.
A Holy-species Digimon. It wears a holy ring on its tail that, if lost, decreases its power.
An alien species that resemble jellyfish. They tend to be very religious and talk in a polite and almost poetic way.
Spider-like parasitic animals from an unknown universe with amazing powers of genetic transformation. Introduced in the original Half-Life, headcrabs come in several varieties, all of which are incredibly dangerous to unsuspecting or unprepared humans.
