Overview
NAM-1975 is a third-person rail-shooter developed and released by SNK for arcades (running Neo-Geo MVS hardware) on April 26, 1990 (in Japan), August 22, 1990 (in North America), and 1991 (in Europe). It was also released for the Neo Geo AES for all regions during their respective launch dates.
One of the four games launched with both arcade and home Neo Geo systems (along with Baseball Stars Professional, Magician Lord, and Mahjong Kyouretsuden: Nishinihon-hen), NAM-1975 takes place during the Vietnam War, as two soldiers are sent in to rescue scientist Dr. Muckley from "Northside Terrorists" in Vietnam.
The game plays similarly to Cabal, where players control both the soldier's movements (to dodge enemy fire) and the crosshair (to aim their weapons, similar to shooting gallery games) at the same time. It is infamous for its final boss battle, which disables continues regardless of how many credits both players have, forcing players to either restart or use memory card progress to complete the game.
It was later ported to the Neo Geo CD (as a launch title) on September 9, 1994. The original game was digitally re-released by D4 for the Wii (via Virtual Console) on April 4, 2013, and by HAMSTER (as part of the Arcade Archives series) for both the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on March 2, 2017, the Nintendo Switch on March 9, 2017, the PC on December 15, 2017, and both iOS and Android devices on December 22, 2021.
