Monarchy is a form of government headed by a single person, usually the heir of the previous monarch. In modern times, monarchs tend to be figureheads with little actual power, but the title of king, queen, emperor, or empress is still associated with absolute power. Hence monarchs appear frequently in video games, especially in fantasy settings. In some games, the player character is even a monarch, though the role often involves more monster-killing and adventures than managing a kingdom.
