    Evil Empire

    Concept »

A theme used very often in fantasy and sci-fi settings is that of a brutal, totalitarian empire or kingdom whose armies oppress the common people. Evil Empires appear under many names in various game worlds, including simply "The Empire".

    Short summary describing this concept.

    Overview

The Evil Empire archetype has its roots in real historical empires, like the Roman Empire, which were often not very gracious towards the inhabitants of the lands they conquered. Some stories even allegorize present-day global powers (particularly the United States) by way of Evil Empires.

Evil Empires are distinct from (though often overlap with), Totalitarian Governments, as they always use military force to expand their territory (rather than staying in the same region), are headed by a monarch, and are generally fictional rather than historical.

Some games also present evil organizations and corporations as akin to evil empires.
