Overview
Marin is a major character in The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening. She finds Link, who initially confuses Marin for Zelda because of her voice and appearance, after he washes ashore on Koholint Island following a shipwreck. Marin is musically talented with a beautiful singing voice, and she and her father Tarin live peaceful lives on the island with its other residents. However, her fondest wish is to become a seagull so that she might fly away and share her singing with those that live in distant lands.
Towards the end of the game, Marin teaches Link the Ballad of the Wind Fish, the song required to awaken the Wind Fish from his slumber inside the giant egg atop Mt. Tamaranch.
Marin's Fate
In the normal course of play, when the Wind Fish is awakened and Link awakens from the dream, Marin will fade away, as does Koholint Island and the rest of its inhabitants. However, if the player manages to complete the game without dying, it is implied that Marin manages to escape the dream with Link. Her wish is granted, and she flies away to share her voice with the world. In the original version of Link's Awakening, she retains her human form, but has grown wings. In Link's Awakening DX, she becomes a seagull.
Influence
Marin and her father Tarin would become the inspiration behind Malon and Talon, the father and daughter duo that operate Lon Lon Ranch in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Aryll, Link's sister in The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, also shares some similarities with Marin; in particular, she has a fondness for seagulls and wears a dress with a hibiscus pattern. Marin, in addition to her wish to become a seagull, wears a hibiscus in her hair.
