Story
Magical energies unleashed during the Rune Wars caused a massive amount of devestation to the natural world. The League's establishment controlled the use of magics by confining their use to the Fields of Justice. They thought that doing so would prevent further environmental damage, that was until Maokai became animated. During a match on The Twisted Treeline an ancient oak tree that stood above the upper jungle roared to life. Before Maokai could be suppressed by the League's Adjudicators he had slain all six participating champions. Maokai was enraged, but regarded his existence with disdain, feeling it was a corruption of nature. He learned to communicate with the humans in hopes of being returned to his former state of being. The League made him an offer, they would find a way to return him as long as he fought in the League of Legends. Maokai held no interest in the outcomes of matches, but saw it as a way to punish the summoners for the effects of their magics. He agreed to participate under the condition that another tree would never be animated. Maokai wears on a lantern to differentiate him from other trees.
