I feel like I've already run out of bad Lego-related rock puns. Uh... how about "for those about to block, we salute you?"
One of the big questions surrounding Lego Rock Band--which, in case you missed it, was officially announced this week--is what, exactly, the game will do differently than a standard Rock Band game. The notion of a new list of tracks and Lego-themed graphics seem like they're a tough sell to some of you folks.

Well, Destructoid dug up a page on xbox.com that offers some additional details, and it sounds like there will be a lot of weird stuff going on around you while you play your plastic instruments. What kind of weird stuff, you ask? How about destroying robots and skyscrapers with the cleansing power of rock?

Also, like the other Lego games, it sounds like you'll earn bricks as you play, which will let you build bigger vehicles... this sounds like it'll be part of the game's progression, so instead of earning a jet by building fans and stars, maybe you'll just earn enough bricks to build a jet and then travel on.

Here's the rest of the story from the xbox.com page:

    • Songs you know and love: Rock out to everything from current radio hits to past favorites the whole family will enjoy.
    • LEGO-themed rock challenges: Play killer riffs to destroy a giant robot, summon a storm, and demolish a skyscraper using the power of rock!
    • Enhanced customizer: Don't stop with your avatar, customize your whole entourage! Design the band, roadies, and manager just the way you want.
    • Build fame LEGO-style: Collect LEGO bricks after each song to build cooler vehicles and move to new venues.
    • LEGO rock den: Buy furniture, decorate the walls and customize your band's hang-out as you climb the ladder to rock success.
    • Fun for everyone: Turn down the difficulty with an easier skill set option for budding musicians.

With an easier difficulty and its Lego focus, it's easy to see that this is designed to be a bit more family friendly than the other Rock Band games. But if it supports songs from Rock Band, Rock Band 2 (which will probably have to get a song export option sooner or later), and the existing downloadable content, I'd probably pop this disc in instead of Rock Band 2, just to watch Lego dudes hopping around in the background. Though now that I think about it, I can't remember the last time I actually popped in a copy of Rock Band 2, either.

Eh, did Jeff have a stroke while writing this?

Maybe some day I'll pick up a Rock Band/ Guitar Hero World Tour game but I doubt this'll be the game to convince me.

The more I hear about this game, the cooler it sounds. And I hate it. I really didn't want to have to buy this game, but it looks like I'm going to.

Or you could just watch This is Spinal Tap over and over and over

EDIT: OOHH and also you should probably specify which ones you mean e.g School of Rock and The pick of destiny. We don't want people carelessly walking into Shallow Hal here.

I still haven't bought any Rock Band games since I lack a PS3 or 360. (want DLC!) But Beatles RB is so enticing.  This looks even spiffier tho!  I want a Lego guitar!!  More waiting? Sigh.

Now I understand.  Of course, the original Rock Band might benefit from that level of customizability.  Is that a word?

Like, picking roadies who are less likely to drop your speakers.  I think I want a band sim more than I want a rhythm game...

If you can export the RB2 stuff, then like Jeff says, i'll probably use this lego version to play rock band from now on. I still play the game quite a bit, and Lego sweetens the deal.

I have to see the full set list to see if this sells me, because "current favorites on the radio" scares me a little.

I didn't get this at first, until I read the latest Penny Arcade blog which pointed out that this game is not for us.  Kids/tweens will love this.  The Giant Bombcast also points out that perhaps this one will be rated E.  I bet it'll be a big seller on Wii.

For those of us who want to play any of these songs, I'm sure Harmonix will throw in an Export feature to have these songs work in RB2.

That sounds very cool. I'm with you on the RB2 stuff, Jeff. I actually don't currently own RB2. I did just get the AC/DC Track Pack though.
Been playing a whole lot of Guitar Hero lately.

    B) I can use my old songs

Rocking out to blow stuff sounds lame, and it's gimmicky, but I really have fun when playing those parts!
