Overview
Jar Jar is a part of the Gungan race in the Star Wars universe. He first appears in the film Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace in a prominent role alongside the characters Qui-Gon Jinn, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker. He appears in numerous video games set during the events of the prequel Star Wars trilogy.
Characteristics
Jar-Jar is a character often used as comic relief. He's a tall creature originating from a Gungan tribe on Naboo. He has big, flappy ears similar to an elephant while having frog like eyes. He has a long tongue like a frog that lets him quickly grab food. He has long arms with hands that have four fingers on them, each finger extended by the longness of Jar-Jar's nails.
Jar-Jar is clumsy, often knocking things over. When in perilous situations, he's often saved by his own clumsiness, saving himself in a comical manner. He has no combat skills whatsoever apart from flailing his arms around and hoping for the best.
Roles in Star Wars
Though Jar-Jar was introduced in a prominent supporting role in The Phantom Menace, audience reaction to the character was by and large negative. His comedic antics, meant to be appeal to younger audiences, became a point of criticism. As a result of the harsh reaction, his role in the remainder of the trilogy was greatly reduced.
Episode I: The Phantom Menace
Jar-Jar makes his first appearance when Obi-Wan Kenobi and Qui-Gon Jinn arrive on Naboo. The Gungan shows the Jedis a hidden path to the besieged palace of Naboo and tags along with the Jedi as they go to Tatooine. He ends up convincing the Gungan council to help the republic thwart the separatist droid army.
Episode II: Attack of the Clones
Jar-Jar becomes an Ambassador at the Republic Senate. He takes Padmé's place as ambassador when she is forced to go into hiding.
Episode III: The Revenge of the Sith
Jar-Jar appears at Padmé's funeral. This is the last time we see Jar-Jar.
