Varok Saurfang was among the first Orcs to drink the blood of Mannoroth on Draenor. A fierce warrior, Orgrim Doomhammer saw his potential and named him second-in-command when he seized control of the Horde during the First War. He regrets the atrocities he has commited under the influence of the Demon's Blood.
After the Third War, Varok was stationed in Orgrimmar to keep the peace. When the Second War of the Shifting Sands began, he relocated to Silithus to command the Might of Kalimdor against the Silithus and the forces of the Old God C'Thun.
During the events of
Wrath of the Lich King, Saurfang is stationed at Warsong Hold as an advisor to
Garrosh Hellscream and commands the Kor'Kron forces. He disagrees with some of Hellscream's methods as they remind him of the savagery of the Orcs under demonic influence. He helps players during a quest line in the Borean Tundra. Varok's son, Dranosh, dies at the battle of the Wrathgate, and players are tasked with returning his armor to his father by
Alexstrasza. When storming Icecrown Citadel, Varok commands the Horde gunship, Orgrim's Hammer. To his dismay, he encounters his son... but transformed into a Death Knight, a servant of the Lich King. Varok reveals that he hid his son away so he wouldn't be tainted by the Blood Curse that affected all the Orcs who drank the blood of Mannoroth. When the battle is done, Varok weeps over his son's corpse and carries him away to give him a proper ceremony in Nagrand, home of his ancestors.
Due to his disagreements with Hellscream, Varok remains in Northrend as part of the Horde's last contingent on the continent, to fight the remnants of the Scourge.
His famous motto is "Honor... no matter how dire the battle... Never forsake it!"
