Hey! Look at me! I'm a Ghostbuster!
Hey! Look at me! I'm a Ghostbuster!
When Sony announced that it had picked up publishing rights for Ghostbusters: The Video Game for Europe and Australia, making the game a PlayStation 3 exclusive for at least a few months, it was kind of a bummer. Atari, it would seem, is sympathetic to the plight of those who got the raw end of that bargain--namely, anyone who loves bustin' ghosts but doesn't own a PS3--as Destructoid is reporting that Atari has confirmed that the North American version of Ghostbusters for the Xbox 360 will be region-free. This means that, other than paying the premium usually associated with importing games from other regions, there's nothing else stopping you from playing that US game in your European or Australian Xbox 360. Though, it is my understanding that games in the EU and AUS cost roughly the same as a large trash bag full of cocaine, so you might actually save some money getting your import on. It would seem that Wii owners are still out of luck, though the real loser now is whoever gets stuck holding the Ghostbusters publishing rights for Xbox 360 in Europe and Australia later this year.

Weird. But at least Atari's still letting Europeans play the Xbox 360 version despite no longer having a presence in the region.

Dude, a large RUBBISH bag of cocaine, games over here cost as much as a large RUBBISH bag. No, no matter how you say it it doesn't make it any better. =(

Yeah a new game over here (UK) can be about $80 depending on where you go, but I've got a PS3 so I won't have to inport a copy, which is nice. Does suck for 360 owners though, especially with the game getting pretty much universal good reviews.

The few times I've imported in the past it's ended up costing me about the same as you'd normally pay for a game over here. I'll probably end up doing this so thanks for telling us it's possible!

This is a pretty devious move by Atari. They've seen the squirrely publishing situation in europe and are trying to make money out of it. I'm not complaining though, it's fantastic news.

A new game here in Denmark cost around the equivalent to 90 usd. Of course minimal wages here are seldom below 16 usd equivalent, but we also have high taxation and 25% value added tax.

Importing from the states is a great and cheaper alternative...BUT If the package is intercepted by the customs the total price could well end up around the equivalent of 120 usd. So it is a gamble.

The game on 360 is £30 ($50) on playasia thats actually cheaper than getting it on ps3 in the uk, playasia cant sell ps3 games to europe becuase sony threated to sue them no problem for 360 users though

Although its worth adding the averge review score right now is 75% so i may not bother

Dumb news. For those of us actually living in Europe(I live in Norway) and import stuff from the states early, know that about 70% of the games with NTSC coding in the US are region free to Europe. There are really just som few exceptions like GTA IV (only one I could think of right now) that dosent work on a European console. Anyone in doubt use the PlayAsia.com list of region free games..

    ...ignorant Americans...

Brand new games in England cost between £30 and £35 which is about $55 so I've got no complaints. For anyone who is savvy enough to buy games from amazon rather than the rip off merchants like game at £40 which is still on par for American prices. To be honest though I think this game will destroy any love I have for ghostbusters so I probably wont be buying it.

It normally works out the same price due to shipping costs a lot of the time, but its great that I get to play it. For those of you interested a newly released game is $120AUD which at the moment is around $97.3 USD. How much is a new release game in the states normally? I'm guessing around $80 USD, which sucks pretty bad for us Australians =/

Can some explain how playing a NTSC game on a PAL 360 works?  I was always under the impression that the whole NTSC/PAL video thing was a technically limiting factor because one format couldn't display properly on a TV of the other format.  But I'd be happy to learn otherwise because I'm a displaced Arizonan living in Denmark and I'd really like to buy a baseball game!

And for the record, game prices in Denmark are ludicrous as well.  $100 USD and up, up, waaaaay up.

I often import my games from a Canadian online store, since their postage for a game to Finland is about the same as within Europe. They also don't mark the true value of content on the parcel, so no added taxes. It also helps that the games are cheap as hell compared to what they are here, so I can confirm that you can save money when importing. One thing I've noticed though is that games come down in price in the UK much faster than in the US, from what I've seen on sites like Amazon anyways.

I really don't get why this weird Idea that Games cost loads in the UK came about.

I just bought Red Faction on the 360 for £34 brand new. Thats a normal price for a game at launch Unless you are daft and buy it at a supermarket.

    £34 = $55

The normal launch game costs LESS in the UK than in the US where you are always complaining about the $60 price point.

ALSO, the average wage for a job in the UK when converted into US dollars is HIGHER than the same comprable job in the US.

MEANING that on the whole £34 is more like $35 when cost of living, wage etc are taken into account.

Yes t depends on the job, and people living down near london have a high cost of living but I have lived in Newcastle and in the US along with my wife (who is American) and kid and I can tell you that unless you are on a high wage job people over in the UK have more money to spend.

Often you get the "well you pay more tax" comment.

We DO NOT PAY ANYTHING for health care. The state hands out Tax credits to people on lower incomes.
I had never really seen Real poverty untuil I lived in the US.

There is a reason my family Lives in the UK and that is because I do not have a highly paid job but I can afford to live in comfort here. My stepmother has the SAME career that I do and she is financially crippled in the US because she doesn't earn enough money to pay for what she needs.  She WAS a well paid manager of a buisiness untuil she got sick and couldnt work which meant she lost her job. The job that paid her Medical insurance!

Now if she ever does earn more money the Medical Bills she owes will simply eat it up.

This is a concept that is UNHEARD of in the UK. I Personally know three families this problem has affected in the US.

So guys get your facts straight before you keep commenting on other countries and cultures.  Its not the first time The Giant Bomb guys have made comments about other countries that are woefully misinformed or simply come from a lack of experience.

@Morden2261: HDTV uses its own standard. 720/1080 is the same resolution no matter which region you're in. In the HD era, NTSC or PAL are used to describe regions and not the type of signal. If you're still using an SD TV, most TVs in Europe support NTSC.

When in comes to "true" PAL vs NTSC, PAL has more lines than NTSC. Therefor it's easy for PAL TVs to support NTSC but not the other way around. Then there's that 50Hz vs 60Hz issue.

I can confirm this, it works perfectly on a PAL (check my achievements) system. The game is somewhat decent, it looks nice and gives me a warm, fuzzy bustan feeling.
