Overview

Flicky is a platformer developed and released by Sega (Company) (with Bally Midway distributing in North America) for arcades (using their System 1 hardware) in May 1984.

In Flicky, players control the eponymous blue bird as they run and jump around a single-screen level that wraps around itself, collecting little yellow birds called "Chirps" (or "Piopio") and bringing them to the exit. Along the way, Flicky must take care to avoid house cats ("Tiger", or "Nyan-nyan") and iguanas ("Iggy" or "Choro"), although Flicky can throw various household objects (such as potted plants, hammers, and telephones) to knock them away.

The game received a home conversion for the SG-1000, released in Japan on December 1984, along with several Japanese home computers (including the FM-7, MSX (Platform), NEC PC-88, and Sharp X1 (Platform)) throughout the 1980's. It later received a Sega Genesis conversion in 1991, which was first released in Japan as a downloadable for the Sega Game Toshokan service before being released in retail format overseas. While no sequels to the game were made, the bird Flicky was later re-tooled into the Sonic the Hedgehog (Franchise) series as the fictional bird species "Flickies".

The Genesis version was later included in the Sega CD (Platform) compilations WonderMega Collection (Game) and Game no Kanzume: Sega Games Can Vol. 1, the Genesis compilations Game no Kanzume: Sega Games Can Otokuyō and Classic Collection (Game), the 2002 compilation Sonic Mega Collection (Game), the 2005 compilation Sonic Mega Collection Plus (Game), the 2009 compilation Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection, and the 2018 compilation Sega Genesis Classics (Game). It was also sold standalone for the PC (Platform) digitally on October 26, 2010 and was included in the Genesis's Nintendo Switch Online service for the Nintendo Switch (Platform) on April 18, 2023. The arcade version was included in the Saturn (Platform) compilation Sega Ages: Memorial Collection Vol. 1.

Gameplay

The player controls a bird named Flicky (Game) and the object of the game is to guide chicks to safety whilst avoiding a cat (Tiger) and a lizard (Iggy). Players can throw certain objects at Tiger and Iggy to kill them. There are 48 proper levels in the game and they are broken up with a mini-game in which Flicky must catch her chicks in a net as they are flung in the air by Tiger. Each main level wraps around.

After finishing the 48 levels, it is possible to replay the game at a higher difficulty setting.

Additional Information

Flickies are a species of bird that have appeared in a number of Sonic games most notably Sonic 3D Blast (Game) and Tails Adventure (Game).
The game was designed by Yoji Shii before he went on to found Artoon.
