This is the first RPG game I had ever experienced. It's one of the best out there. No other RPG can compete. This game has it all from the cool locations, bosses, enemies, humor, kung fu, characters like Shadow and the coolest villain ever, Kefka. The story is good and its typical villain wants to rule the world and kill those who stand in his way. This game is also the last RPG game I played. Sadly, that is the truth.

The best Final Fantasy ever made!
Yea, its the best Final Fantasy I've played. Final Fantasy VII is overrated. Not to say its bad (unless we speak of the game up until the motorcycle chase :P), but its not as stellar as people make it out to be.
I'm not going to pass judgement on which Final Fantasy is the best. Instead, I'll focus on my favourite FFs and in that respect, Final Fantasy VI is definitely one of my top three. My favourite, however, is almost certainly Final Fantasy VII for pretty much the same reason EPGPX prefers VI: it was the first RPG I ever played and opened my eyes to what a fantastic storytelling medium games are. For what it's worth, I place VI in my top three because of the fantastic cast, the epic storyline and the best music from any instalment in the series.
Yeah, FF 6 is great. Real great. So is 7.
8, though, is a cut above any RPG I ever played. Most people won't agree, but if you have an ounce of brainpower to master the Junction system, it's really a step above.

Nobuo Uematsu finest piece of work ever. You will fall in love with the music as soon as you listen to the game intro.

I actually already put FFVI as my fave FF in my bio. Was incredible at the time it came out and is still fun to play on the handheld versions. FFVI was also the last time we had a huge selection of characters to choose from, I miss the variety of characters in recent FF games.
FF8 hands down. Then after 8 would be the original final fantasy movie (spirits within) which I feel is extremely under appreciated just because it doesn't have its basis off of a game :|
FFVI is my favorite RPG, and the best FF in the franchise. I know FFVII was a lot of people's first RPG, but for someone who played it since FFI, FFVII was the moment the series jumped the shark. VII was less about challenging gameplay and more about watching a story unfold. Nothing against that, that kind of experience is fine, but for an old-school FF player, VII was like a slap to the face.
Anyway, didn't mean to say so much about FFVII. I don't mind that so many people love it. The more RPG fans, the better! I just didn't care for it after playing my favorite, VI. I actually really liked X and XII despite all that. I really love Lost Odyssey for that matter. It feels to me like the game that FFVII should have been. It's more of an extension to VI than VII was. It even feels very similiar to IV in many ways.
It would be really hard for me to say which is my favorite, because of the different eras they were made of and all, so let me try to list them all in order of how much I enjoyed them (I have III, V, VI, VII, IX, X, XII)
7. Final Fantasy III
6. Final Fantasy VI
5. Final Fantasy V
4. Final Fantasy X
3. Final Fantasy VII
2. Final Fantasy IX
1. Final Fantasy XII
I'm also playing Chrono Trigger right now (level 20 party, fixed the Masamune), and this is my second day and I'm almost done, but it's an incredible game and ranks up there with XII and IX. The thing that I really despised about the FF series was all the random battles, so these games really click for me in that you can see them coming and can avoid them. None of those random attacks.
I think for me it's dificult to say wich is best... but here are my favorites and why. no order involved
I'm totally in agreement that this is the best RPG I've ever played, to date. I certainly haven't come across any with as great of a storyline, ensemble of characters or sidequests to do. I've been playing RPGs for many years, before and since this game came out, and it's not only my favourite FF, but my favourite RPG, hands down.
I agree this is my favorite RPG of all time. The storyline is engaging and the list of playable characters is huge!
It was definitely a fun experience playing through this bad boy.
The first Final Fantasy I played was Final Fantasy on the NES. Final Fantasy VI is my personal favorite (and consequently the one I consider "the best"). I've played all of the Final Fantasy games (and I mean all of them) that were released in English. None of them beat Final Fantasy VI.
"it was a great experiencewhoa, short? I remember investing over 60 hours in FFIII.. I would go to my friend's house after school and play it for a few hours almost every night for several weeks, this game had a ton of side quests and optional characters to unlock.
so unfortunate that it was rather/relatively short (about 20 hours)

FFVI is the best by far! EVIL KEFKA MIDI LAUGH!!!

Wait, and the last?
Have you played other RPGs in between your first playthrough and your latest?
If not, then how can you tell which FF is the best ever made :|
FF6 is my favorite Final Fantasy game. FF6 and Chorno Trigger are the best RPGs I ever played and simply the best 16-bit era games ever made.
I just started playing Chrono Trigger DS and would really enjoy FF6 getting the same kind of re-release for the DS in the same manner as they did for FF4 (FF2usa). It still amazes me what the DS is capable of...
there are two problems with me posting. One I've only played FFVII, and I'm a Tales fan. Now I know that I'm going to get ripped to shreds BUT...there are a lot of you that are complaing (kinda). My one problem was that the story in FF was never epic. Some may say that its not, but, I forgot to mention, after playing X as well, I just didn't see the story as really getting anywhere. If any of you can say that you cried for a FF story than I might back down. If you're a HUUUUUUUUUUGE fan of turn based than i guess a Tales game isn't for you, but if its only your favorite it might be time to switch. If you're getting bored of the stories and slow, untheatorical gameplay please at least try a Tales game. One last thing that I want to mention. PATHETIC love story in X. I look forward to your hate replies, propoganda, and overall anger. Maybe I'll switch to FF......nah.....
Anyone know a good place to try and buy this? I recently dug out the GBA and never experienced this classic in any way, shape, or form.
FF6 is my favorite in the main franchise. I think the following games, when they moved to Playstation, CD-Rom and Polygon graphics, were victim of the high cost of making games and had to cut down on story content, big, non linear areas, huge cast, etc.
You can kinda see proof of this when you get great GBA or DS JRPG that are sprite based, have no voice acting and way less CG cutscenes. You get more actual game when the Devs focus on gameplay and story.
The first time always feels so amazing. Games, life, etc. I was crushed as a 6 year old that I had to return my rental of FF1. It had an internal memory. You could save your game. Characters got better over time. There were stories, the world was open, it was crazy. DQ1 was okay too. I mean DW1, ha ha ha localization.
